English director Paul Greengrass excels in two varied genres and styles of filmmaking, and has become one of my favorite directors in each. In the docu-drama genre, which he directs and writes, are his films “Bloody Sunday” (2002), a dramatization of the Irish civil rights protest march and subsequent massacre by British troops on January 30, 1972, and “United 93” (2006), which presents the September 11, 2001 events of the fourth plane that was hijacked.
The action adventure genre, particularly the ‘Jason Bourne’ films based on the Robert Ludlum books, have become signature films for Matt Damon as well as director Paul Greengrass, and are my favorites of the action adventure franchises. Their latest, “Green Zone”, once again solidifies the dynamic thrill ride of their collaboration!
Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller (Matt Damon), is assign to the Army division whose primary mission is to locate ‘Weapons of Mass Destruction’ in Iraq, following the infamous attack and destruction of the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11, 2001.
When Intel provided for his unit consistently turns up negative, he begins to suspect a covert plan by state department officials to validate the Iraq invasion. The more questions he asks, and the deeper he digs, he soon discovers that his suspicions relating to the covert and faulty intelligence is, in fact true.
With no alternative but to go rogue, he hunts for Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq, with the assistance of a lone CIA supervisor (Brendan Gleeson) who shares similar views on the faulty Intel, and wants the truth as well.
I’m an avid admirer of Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon’s ‘Jason Bourne’ teaming for the Robert Ludlum stories. If this is your forte’ as well, you won’t be disappointed!
