'The Filipino Flash' backs up 'The Hawaiian Punch'

Less than a year ago, Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire Jr. and Brian "The Hawaiian Punch" Viloria thrilled local fans at the Araneta Coliseum as they headlined "The Flash and the Furious" aka "Pinoy Power 1" card and both won in sensational fashion.

Last weekend, Viloria was the solo starring act at the jam-packed Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City, Philippines in a card titled "Collision Course".

Everything was going as hoped. All the Filipino fighters in the televised under card won their matches and Viloria was on his way to what looked like his second successful title defense all the way to the ninth round.

Until all of a sudden, Viloria started to gas out. And the rest is history.

Donaire thought Viloria was going to be able to hold on and said, "I think he did well. He started really strong and he was doing great. I thought he was going to be able to hold on, and pull off the win."

Was it a case of feeling the pressure? Over-training? Or simply being too distracted being in the Philippines? Donaire responded saying, "I don’t know the answer to that. Only Brian really knows what really happened but I'm glad he is safe. He fought with a lot of heart, win or lose people have to respect that."

Some have been saying that Viloria might have been distracted with all the medial hoopla, together with his engagement to his long-time girlfriend, so I asked Nonito's wife Rachel, who not too long ago was in a similar situation with Nonito whether the distractions do get out of line at times. Rachel said,

"I can’t really say because me and Nonito were never in that type of situation and I don't really know for sure how Viloria handled things. Nonito proposed to me 4 months before his scheduled Dubai fight. When that was called off in April, we focused on the wedding. It can get very stressful but I think it depends on how each pressure handles things,"

and also added,

"When Nonito headlined Flash and the Furious, they had a full load of scheduled guestings for 2 weeks, but the week of the fight, Nonito said no more. He needed to focus and he was done, no matter what they said. But according to Brians Twitter, they were jam packed with guestings, and interviews and schedules that landed them home late most of the time. The combination of cutting weight, and having to smile even though your body is tired, can exhaust you. Brian was just too nice and
accommodating, I think."

There are whispers out there from good intentioned parties like Inquirer veteran writer Recah Trinidad that perhaps Viloria should retire after collapsing in his locker room following the loss. I personally think Viloria still has it in him. but he definitely should revisit what got him back to the top. And that's being humble and going back to simplicity and his roots and block away all the distractions and trappings. If he fails to do that, he might not be so fortunate the next time around. I admire Viloria for giving it his all, but at the end of the day as they say, "health is the ultimate wealth."

Whatever Viloria decides to do here on out is up to him. All we could hope for him is the best.

On a different note, check out this video below as Team Donaire shared some secrets during their training camp. Donaire is training hard for his next fight which will be against Guerson Guerrero and will headline Pinoy Power 3 in Las Vegas on February 13.

..it must be the shoes lol.

ur supposed to train to fight for all 12 rounds. in fact Pacquiao was quoted as saying he trains himself mentally & physically to go beyond 12 rounds.

tanga ang mga trainer in Viloria at baka si Viloria mismo ang tanga. Look at the young George Foreman, lost to Ali becoz of no stamina. (and no brain)

To the person who posted as 'Mali and training":
If you are a Filipino and love your country, don't criticize Viloria and his people like the way you posted here. Our country will never go forward with attitude like yours.Think positive kabayan. Some people in our beloved Philippines are so invective and destructive no wonder we are not progressing like other countries. We need to support and give boost and hope for Brian.
He is one of us.His victories before was laurels for us.Now ,let me ask you:"Change your way of approaching life,my friend".It will refresh your mind.Mabuhay tayong mga Pilipino!!

It is funny that Nonito Jr always talks good about people in interviews after the fact but he was already talking trash to Brian before this. He tries to make himself look like a nice caring guy but he was talking trash about him before. weird.

It's not fair for a boxer to be insulted, just because he lost the game, the important thing is that he gave his best, even hall of famer boxers have experiences of losing the game. It's good to win but sometimes we need to learn from our mistakes to make us a better opponent.

A-SIDE METH!!! Pacroids exposed! Haha I can't believe all of you Pactards continue to deny this fact. Hah what can you expect from a pactard. That's also the reason why Hawaiian pussy lost the fight it's because he didn't use his PED's and steroids hahaha.

Bryan should concentrate on endurance and ask tips from Pacquiao and he will be a great champion.
