Respect for 'The Hawaiian Punch' Brian Viloria

Tamara raises his hand after his win (Copyright Dong Secuya)

Brian Viloria gave it his all. Actually he almost gave too much.

After mustering everything he could to stay up and give every ounce left from his enervated body, Viloria fainted in his locker room after the fight and was rushed to the hospital to get treated.

Had referee Bruce McTavish not stopped the fight in a timely manner, it could surely have spelled disaster for the Hawaiian Punch.

At the end of the day however, we should congratulate both Viloria and Carlos Tamara for their efforts instead of throwing insults.

Tamara deserved every bit of respect for beating a champion in his home court. I have read some people throwing PED accusations at Tamara. That's just silly and has to stop. The guy deserve props.

As for Viloria, I have read a lot of mean comments like calling him "The Hawaiian Flower" and people saying he quit and that he had no heart and was simply exploiting his Filipino side but does not really rep for the Philippines. Those are all cheap shots. Whatever reasons were behind his loss, Viloria already paid the price. We must appreciate his feats and the honor he has achieved, not kick him while he is down.

If anything, we should pray for his health and safety. Boxing is a life-threatening sport. All I have is respect for the fighters. Viloria came back from the bottom to the top and dedicated himself to becoming a world champion again and he did. Perhaps as fans we get carried away a little bit and spoiled by Pacquiao's accomplishments.

With that said, I think we should take this opportunity as well to appreciate and value what fighters like Pacquiao, Nietes and Donaire have achieved. It's not easy to be a long-reigning world champion. These fighters try their best to constantly improve in their craft, but even sometimes that is not enough. But that doesn't mean we should be calling them names and throwing them under the bus.

It doesn't really matter to me what reasons were behind Viloria's loss. You can blame it on the rain or blame it on a-a-a-a-a-al-co-hol (the song just played in the background), but the fact of the matter is, sometimes we just have to accept that the better man won that night. I'm glad that Viloria is safe and in stable condition and as far as Tamara, I got nothing but respect for what he accomplished. You can't win 'em all fellas!

It was an amazing fight. Viloria just run out of gas. Probably from over training. For whatever reason, they should learn from it and move on. Tamara was amazing on this fight. The courage that he showed fighting against the champion in a clear home advantage.

The better man won. That's all there is.

Hopefully he wont suffer the same fate as Z Gorres did. Our prayers are with you Brian.

Great career, probably time to hang-up the gloves for him.

He tried his best to wn during the fight. He had guts. But Viloria seemed to have erred in his preparation. He did not train properly. A champion should prepare for 12 rounds. He began to tire sometime in the 8th round. For a fighter of this level to tire with 4 rounds remaining indicates poor preparation. His coach is equally to blame. He is supposed to supervise his training and preparation and ensure that he has stamina to last 12 good rounds of fighting. Beware Donaire you might suffer a similar fate in his hands.

I also do have respect for Brian but i think he had win the fight if he didn't end up gasping w/ air in the latter rounds. We all know that in boxing and in any other sports the real battle or competition will not commence when you stepped on the ring or court or field but at the training camp. Definitely Villoria gave his all inside the ring but i have not big, but a little doubt, if he did it outside (in the training)

@jovilito1974..not minding the troll will make them vanished.

This loss of Viloria proves that he is not mentally strong. He failed to psyche himself into preparing well for this fight. This is his second coming having been a champion before and lost. Through dedication and hardwork he started from square one and clawed his way back to become champion again.Only to lose this way, tiring out and losingg while leading all the way what seemed to be a one-sided affair in his favor. Is it more difficult to maintain the championship ? More difficult that becoming a champion? In Viloria's case this seems so. Is another comeback for Viloria attainable and proper. I think with this loss, most fans would have lost interest in him to bet for or pay to view. He should leave boxing as a fighter and retire.

I think he is lack of training. and we can see Tamara really train hard. half of the fight I can see already Brian softening. That is what we are saying, you dont need PED to win the fight! You need to train hard and give everything on training like what Manny always does! Tamara win the fight not because he is better than Brian, but because he stand strong and durable until the last round! And those fool people? never mind them!

dennis, let me take a contrary position: how can you give respect to a worker who does not do his job properly? i am a cop here in the philippines and i am expected to render 8 hours of duty. would you still respect me if i work very hard for 7 hours and sleep in the remaining 1 hour? i will just tell you that "i ran out of gas" so i need to sleep.

viloria just did that. he worked for 8 rounds and slept in the remaining rounds. in the process, he foolishly endangered himself just like a cop sleeping on the job: he could have gotten killed. this is a question of work ethics: just like us cops, there is a saying: "sweat more in training so that you bleed less in battle." remember that brian is not a pure filipino. his heritage maybe but his upbringing is not. if you follow his facebook accout, his life is nothing like most of our filipino boxers. brian needs to dedicate more time to his craft and review his work ethics. he needs to prepare to work for 12 rounds.

Viloria was leading and winning going into the ninth round. Knowing that he was tiring at that juncture, he should have conserved his strength by fighting smartly. He could have danced, backtracked, roped-a-dope, jabbed sparingly with some combinations now and then but not mixed it up. The idea is to last the full distance. It only shows that he did not have ring smarts which was apparent even in his remarks while doing analysis and commentating with Trinindad in some Pacquiao fights.

Common guys! That's what the sport of boxing is all about. You can't win them all. Brian Viloria, despite the loss, deserves our admiration and respect. He made us proud. 100% he is still my champ. Long live Brian Viloria!

For those who said that Viloria ran out of gas due to over training are STUPID. This is the same reason and excuse usually made by ALA of Cebu when their boxers lose stamina on the late rounds. ALA training system is the worst in the world and their boxers are the laziest kind. Viloria is just a mediocre boxer. All his past wins were all fluke. ALA boxers on the other hand always fought and will always fight tuktuk drivers. They will not fight quality opponents because if they do they will end up in hospital. Viloria and ALA have a similarity.

as i watched the fight villoria is ahead of points, but what really bother me when the 9th round enter, he look exhausted, and easily hit.i ask my self, what happen to the champion? he even cannot escape the punch, not even a lateral movement, one thing that come in to my simple mind: the champion is lack of preparation for this fight.he didn't do his part as a fighter, he his lack of discipline as a fighter. if he is over trained for the said fight he will not be exhausted in the late tround maybe he will slow a little but as what i saw the champion is fighting like a drunk person in the ring?therefore it is clear that the champion is exhausted.to you brian villoria put this in your mind:NEVER UNDER ESTIMATE YOUR OPPONENT AND TRAIN HARD AND BE ADISCIPLINE BOXER. IF YOU CANNOT DO THAT THEN RETIRE YOU ARE NOT FITTED TO BE A BOXER.

Brian Viloria gave it his all. He has nothing more to prove in boxing. He was a world champion twice and made us Filipinos proud.

What bothers me was the news accounts of what transpired in the ring. I did not see the fight, but based on news accounts, Viloria had Tamara's face swollen, had him in a corner, and hit him with heavy power shots, in the early rounds, in the seventh and especially the eight. But Tamara survived all these and "surprisingly got stronger" in the ninth.

Now, we don't want to accuse Tamara of anything. The thought of his two young daughters probably gave him another burst of energy. Or it could also be PEDs. That is why all fighters should undergo rigid pre-fight examinations to be sure they are clean. As one sportswriter said, smashing a baseball while on steroids is one thing; smashing another person's head while on steroids is another.

It is very disheartening really that one bad thing about SOME Pinoys is the so-called GOOD WEATHER FRIENDS. Sa panahon ng kasayahan o tagumpay, KAIBIGAN; Sa panahon ng kabiguan o Kalungkutan, KAAWAY, TINATAPAKAN, TINATADYAKAN, DINUDURAAN. It is a fact that Brian lost the fight to the better man. But it is also a fact that HE LOST THE FIGHT FIGHTING TO THE LAST OUNCE OF COURAGE. He did not lose by running. He did not lose by quitting on the stool like 6-TIME WORLD CHAMPION OSCAR DE LA HOYA.

What if it happens to Pacman? will you make bad names too? Filipinos and boxing fans should not be so arrogant... everyone has the chance of being a winner and a loser, If that's your fate then you can't change that even if you trained so much pre-fight! They've been beaten physically but don't beat the boxers as a human being!

It is very disgusting to read comments made against Villoria. He sure doesn't have the talent as Pacquiao or may have been his own fault for losing but we should not mock him. Why can't we just give him constructive criticism - remember he almost lost his life after the bout.

I don't want to kick him when he's down and I appreciate your support to Viloria but he's one snob SOB. Saw him in Glendale a few months back and I acknowledged him and said "pinoy ako pare! goodluck" and he just bowed his head without acknowledging back and even looked ashamed. The least that he could have done was nod back. I encountered Manny Pacquiao in a derby in Araneta and I shouted "Idol" and wanted to shake his hand and his bodyguards didn't want me to get close but he said "padaanin nyo ayos lang yan" and I managed to shake his hand and he even gave me a pat at the back and asked if I was winning or losing. Part of me wants him to win but part of me is glad he lost. But I do hope he's ok healthwise. Moral of the story...huwag masyado mayabang.
