What can the Clottey fight tell us about Mayweather vs. Pacquiao?

The Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey fight got a lot of mixed reactions from the fans and press. Some took the fight to be a demonstration of Pacquiao's dominance over yet another top ten opponent.

Others were disappointed with Clottey for not taking more chances and trying to take the fight to Pacquiao. Whatever your opinion though the fight was fairly one sided in Pacquiao's favor. Talk will soon once again turn to whether the super fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather can be made, after Pacquiao's election and Mayweathers upcoming fight that is.

So what if anything did the Clottey fight tell us about how Pacquiao might deal with Mayweather, and equally what would Mayweather have seen that he could take advantage of?

Pacquiao's speed, which is a big advantage in every fight he has had at welterweight, was evident against Clottey, but would face a more severe test against the equally quick Mayweather.

Shots that caught Clottey and his flat footed shell defense would obviously not catch Mayweather as often, and Pacquiao would have to work more on throwing punches from different angles rather than the volume he displayed against Clottey.

Mayweather will have liked what he saw from Pacquiao with regards to defense however, with a lot of Clottey's shots finding their mark with little head movement from Pacquiao. Some of this might have been Pacquiao's desperate attempts to make Clottey fight back rather than stand still blocking punches but still. Mayweather's punches are a lot more subtle and hard to see coming than the often telegraphed shots Clottey was firing last Saturday night, and even then they were getting through.

Against aggressive fighters Pacquiao relies largely on simply hitting them with more than they can return fire with, and as such rarely gets hit with a lot of clean shots. Against defensive fighters he does not have this luxury and has always struggled with good counter punchers.

Clottey himself has backed Pacquiao to finish Mayweather, but perhaps holds his own performance in optimistically high regard. Lasting the distance alone does not elevate Clottey to predict how better boxers he hasn't fought would do against someone he had nothing against. Still for what it's worth he did have a valid point about Mayweather's work rate being a problem. Pacquiao is a do or die fighter and will come after Mayweather with everything he has. He won't be put off by taking a few shots and he will certainly throw a lot more punches than Floyd.

Not that many will probably catch Mayweather cleanly, but if his work rate is similar to how it has been in his last few outings, the volume alone from Pacauiqo might win him rounds.

Both Pacquiao and Mayweather have shown to have decent chins, and neither have been in any trouble over the last few years. Mayweather did topple Ricky Hatton, a lesser but similarly attack orientated fighter who at the time was thought to have a decent chin as well. Coupling this with Pacquiao's tendency to leave himself open this could become dangerous territory for him if he doesn't tighten up his defense.

The same can be said of Mayweather himself though, as the sheer volume of Pacquiao's shots will eventually wear him down even if he can block or dodge most of them. Clottey lasted as long as he did because he is a huge welterweight and  he can really take a punch. Mayweather has gone as long as he has without a loss because he doesn't get hit.

Steve Marsh, Pittsburgh PA: "If Pacquiao can put out the same amount of punches against Mayweather a she did with Clottey, Floyd will be getting his 0 taken. All Pacquiao has to work on is his defense"

Randall Jones, Philadelphia PA: "Mayweather and Pacquiao wont fight anyway, but if they did Mayweather would give him a boxing lesson. Beating up on a punch bag like Clottey is one thing, but against someone who can make him miss and hit him back with no problems, Pacquiao is in trouble"

John Grover, Pittsburgh PA: "A Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight would be too close to say one would definitely beat the other. All the fanboys saying Manny would tool Floyd and Floyd would smash Manny know nothing about boxing. The fight would probably go to a decision and most likely a split decision as well'

pacquiao is very much hittable, we all know that. but in the clottey fight, i believe pacquiao was goading clottey to throw punches and therefore show more openings for him to take advantage. noticed how pacquiao sometimes stepped forward while covering up... he got caught by good uppercuts. unfortunately, clottey didnt bite or capitalized on it. i dont think roach would make the same strategy with floyd... then again floyd is not a big puncher.

What fighter would worry about defense if the opponent is not shooting back?
Pacquiao got used to Clottey's passive stance that he would rather throw his punches at a relaxed level than worry about defense. Of course that leads to being careless and that's what happened. But the fight taught Pacquiao to drop the defense expense and get more leverage.

Pac will not punch himself out so Floyd already knows this.

His gameplan will be to run and potshot all night long.

The fight will be boring. The hype will be 10x greater than the fight itself. It will disappoint a lot of patrons but it doesn't matter because both of them will retire anyway. The promoters just want to make sure it generates as much income as possible.

Clottey did not engage as he was scared to fight toe to toe with the pound for pound king,.. he was a defensive fighter, same fate will happen to Mayweather Jr., as the viewers on that fight(if it ever happens) will boo him for running in circles against Pacman..

The Pacquiao-Mayweather bout if it will push through would be an interesting and exciting to watch. Manny is a ring tactician who can shift from one strategy to another - depending on the fighting style of his opponent. Being a courageous boxer or 'No Fear' attitude who will engage anybody above the ring is his big asset. His powerful punches is another. He is willing to receive some big punch just to insert his own devastating left and fully-developed and equally powerful right. Too bad if Mayweather will again put so many nonsensical excuses or alibis in order to duck Pacman.

I don't know about Floyd also having a great chin. Fact is, Floyd is a safety first, a hit-and-not-get-hit type of boxer. He said it himself. He has never really been beat up, at least not in the same way that Manny has taken the best punches of Morales, Marquez, Cotto and even Clottey. So Manny chin is tested; Floyd's is not. Floyd would probably block or evade most of Manny's punches, but because of Manny's tremendous work rate some of those punches will find their mark and they will hurt Floyd if they land clean. How is he going to react when that happens? Again, we don't know because Floyd has never been in that situation before. Perhaps, on May 1, if Mosley lands his big punches, as he promised, we will find out, and from it, we will be able to make an educated guess as to how Floyd vs. Manny would pan out if ever they fight.

Pacman & Clottey fight cant be a barometer of things to come between Pacman & Gayweather...we don't even know if that fight will happen at all? I fit does...Clottey and Gayweather are both of different style and caliber...Pacman can be out boxed by Gayweather if worst things comes to worst! Or...vice versa... fans and pundits can all say what they want and have a field day doing it for both sides..but for a casual fan like me...just get the fight done and sealed then let Pacman and Mayweather walk the talk!Who wins..it doesn't matter because they'll both end up richer by millions anyway and us fight fans a few bucks poorer...maybe what's at stake are just "bragging rights" for both them.

Let me get this straight, to all of you that thinks Mayquacker will KTFO Manny are delusional. You need to lay down that pipe. How can he KO him if he keeps on dodging, shoulder rolling and running away the ring?? He will catch Pac with a counter jab from time to time but that's not enough to knock out Manny. It's a fact! And you i d i o t s knows it. Manny will unload hundreds if not, thousands of punches and he will eventually catch Floyd with a solid left. And that my friends will make Fraud staring at the ceiling and the referee looking down on him. Eventually he will end up in lala land just like Hatton.

Most of us are bit quick to criticize Clottey for the way he fought last Saturday. But little most of us realize how difficult was his situation beginning the first round when MP opened the round with a barrage of powerful punches to his bread basket. We are unaware how Clottey suffered and feigned being unhurt by those over a hundred punches each round - or 1200 punches in 12 rounds. By covering his face, he left his left body and kidney open to constant pummeling by MP's powerful right. We dont know he might have urinated some blood after the fight or have even a broken rib. Unless he will publicly admit it, we boxing fans will never know. So, give Clottey a break. Put ourselves on his shoes and predicament during that bout and we will surely would have also switched to survival mode. A lesser and opponent who is not as tough as Clottey would have readily folded down during the early rounds. I admired Clottey's toughness and courage to survive the 12 rounds.

all of you pundits i strongly suggest you watch all mayweather's fight against a southpaw.he turns into a clottey type defense and it was clearly displayed in the fight against judah.it is obvious that the the shoulder roll at an orthodox stance does not work well against a southpaw.if people say clottey is not the guage i strongly say that clottey is almost the perfect picture of floyd fighting pac.pac by u.d. or late k.o.!and by the way at pac clottey fight pac has no other way to beat clottey but to pour on punches despite knowing that his clean punch percentage output goes down and this does not mean to say that pac is always like this.the point is pac always adjust to every fight he encounters.could floyd do that?i guess not that is why he cherry picks his oponent just to match with his advantage over them!

We all know that Mayweather is going to push his thing about drug testing or come up with another lame excuse just to avoid the fight. If and thats a big IF the fight ever materialize, i dont think Mayweathers shoulder roll and even his counter-punching abilities will be of much help for the Filipino hurricane. Only thing left for him.. run and run and do some counter punching to win rounds.. pathetic...

First, critics say Pac has trouble with counter-punchers. The only counter-puncher that gave Pac problems was Marquez. Pac dropped him 4 times in 2 fights. Marquez throws combinations inb countering. Floyd pot shots, never throws combos, and has brittle hands. He's also older. Let's see how he moves against an aggressive Shane who is also a powerful puncher. May 1st will definitely provide Pac/Roach better plan to breaking down and attacking Floyd. I would much rather see a Pac Mosley fight anyway.

just wondering how come clottey claims that he did not feel the power of manny and was not hurt. If this is true, how did he not hit manny and made a real good fight - took advantage of that edge in being strong and the opponent having no power. i suppose that even if manny fires a flurry of jabs and could not hurt him, he would have fought back at will. this should have been an opportunity for clottey to defeat manny and even knock him out! why???

i don't believe Clottey and he was just lying. clottey was hurt and he felt the power of manny. that's the reason he kept staying with his peek-a-boo defense afraid of being punch out with manny's power.

this is a simple analysis...people continue to lie just to say he is also strong and bold. no, because manny's punches really hurt clottey was afraid of getting hit and go down to the canvass just like hatton. if you review some rounds, you'll notice clottey's reactions, body and head moving backwards when hit by manny's power jabs.
