Manny and Floyd to go head to head for pay per view buys in March

Money will try to outsell Pacquiao (AP Photo)

Before the fight negotiations for Mayweather and Pacquiao, one of the biggest points of contention that the fans thought would come up would be the fight purse. The main concern with fight purses tends to be which is the bigger draw in terms of pay per view draws.

In the end the purse was split evenly between the two, although of course the fight collapsed anyway. The question of which was the biggest draw was never fully resolved although fans of each both claimed their man was the bigger star.

In March that question might well be settled once and for all, as Manny Pacquiao takes on Yuri Foreman and Floyd looks set to take on an as yet named opponent  just one week earlier. Neither fight is fully confirmed yet, but if both go ahead Floyd will fight on March 13th and Pacquiao on March 20th, both probably in Las Vegas.

Even more prescient is the fact that neither of their opponents are likely to be major draws in their own right. Foreman is a champion and popular in some circles, but he isn't well known to most of the public. Similarly an opponent willing to take a fight against Floyd Mayweather on fairly short notice isn't likely to be a major star either. Matthew Hatton has been mentioned and is apparently on standby, although the rumor was that Floyd wanted that fight to take place in Manchester England, where Hatton could drum up a bigger crowd.

Manny can prove his drawing power (AP Photo)

A lot of which sells better will probably depend on how each fight is marketed. The Foreman fight is easy enough because Pacquiao is moving up in weight again and challenging for his 8th title. Mayweather has yet to name his opponent so the marketing is a little difficult to predict, but if Matty Hatton is named then some sort of revenge angle for Floyd beating brother Ricky Hatton is probably the way to go.

The two events being potentially so close together might force one or the other to change dates if they think they will struggle against the other, but this hasn't happened yet. There are also several UFC cards scheduled for March, and while the specific dates have yet to be announced, if they use some of their major stars then they could affect the buy rate.

Although the UFC struggle to compare to either fighter when they are taking on top competition, the perception of both taking easier fights than usual might help the MMA promotion out.

Given the pay per views will only be one week apart, the potential is there for one of the two to struggle to shift many pay per views at all. Sure there are some people who will by both, but the majority of the fans will probably pick between the two based on which they like better. Mayweather does have a small advantage of being a week earlier, although that isn't likely to have a major effect on what Pacquiao and Foreman will sell.

Foreman should be an interesting match for Pacquiao (AP Photo)

Manny is undoubtedly the more exciting fighter to watch against most opposition, and this fight will probably be no different. Foreman might frustrate him for a while with his reach, but Pacquiao should walk him down and start his usual hatchet job after a few rounds.

Mayweather does hold the advantage of being able to sell and hype up a fight better though, even if it is a real stinker, or completely one sided (the Juan Manuel Marquez fight for example). Whether that will be enough to outsell Manny and his global fan base will have to remain to be seen, but things might be close.

Hopefully though both fights do similar numbers rather than one outright routing the other. The reason being that if one outsells the other by a large amount then should the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao showdown start to gain momentum again, the temptation will be there for one side to demand a bigger purse share and derail the fight again.

who will pay to see matt vs mayweather? im betting ya it won't go on british ppv. brits know who matt is. matt is definitely not ricky in terms of appeal.

pac vs. foreman in my estimate can do up to 600k buys. still, pac would have the edge as his fights are able to be shown on ppv while floyd's on free tv.

this is the reason why the fight has to be made now and not after any other fight because the longer it takes the more disadvantageous it becomes for Floyd.

I tend to agree with Freddy, that Juan Manuel Marquez will have more following and they can meet at Jr. welterweight. These guys have a history together, so why not settle it now before Manny retires. Mexico and the Philippines, it can't get any better than that!

If, as Coach Roach proposed, Juan Manuel Marquez will be the opponent of Manny in March 2010, they should fight at 135 lbs for the WBO/WBA/Lineal/Ring lightweight belts to make the fight more competitive so PPV buys will reach 1M buys.

To Jay Ari Yin: Pacquiao would never go down to lightweight because he is going to have a hard time making the weight limit. According to Roach pac had a difficult time making the 135 pound weight limit against the diaz fight. He is willing to fight marquez at junior welterweight limit if he is interested at all but roach is not matchmaker and marquez is probrably still under contract with GBP.

Mayweather is a tragically laughing stock having to hide in the impossible as it is blood and urine test as never been done in the NSAC commissioned fights. and he is even dum to let go of a biggest money fight out there for him. It only shows how coward he is to lose his zero over tougher oppositions. Might as well Matthew Hatton to really train hard and frustrate this guy and get a solid revenge for your brother! Nevertheless PPV buyers dont support his fight to teach him lessons.

I am amazed at how fans and hater alike thinks that Floyd really wanted this fight. Floyd is playing the Mind Games? You've got to be kidding me. Floyd is not that smart. I know that this fight aint going to happen since the beginning. In fact, I will only believe this when I hear the bell sounds and both of them are in the ring. Otherwise, even if the contract have been signed, it's still not a sure thing. You ever heard of a thing called "Freak Accident"? That actually is Floyd's last card. Oh yeah he still has more than you think. That Olympic-style drug test is just one of them. Floyd's "0" is much more important to him than $40m. If he looses that "0" what do you think Floyd has left? Correct. Nothing. And once he looses that, it's going to be hard for him to come back at the top again, because in order for him to do that is to fight one of the elite, which we know he would never do. He can still get that $40m by fighting 4 bums and assuming that all his looser fans buy ppv.

  • Why Floyd Would Never Fight Pacman 2 years ago

    1. He retired when there's no one else to fight except for Mosley, Cotto, Margarito and Williams.
    2. He came back and fought a LightWeight at WelterWeight. And to seal the win, he comes in 2lbs over weight.
    3. Reports about him fighting another Hatton even before the negotiation with Pacquiao started.
    4. Pacquiao beat Cotto. Then he said Pacquiao doesn't want to fight him because Pac refused to answer the question. He thought that people would think that Pac is afraid of him so he can have an excuse not to fight Pac.
    5. Pacquiao went on record and said that he wants to fight Floyd. Oops. Next card.
    6. Floyd demanded that they fight on March 13 thinking that Pacquiao would refuse because of the coming election. Pac Agreed. Oopps. Next card.
    7. Floyd demanded that they fight at 154. Pac rejected. Floyd then realizes that he will look stupid to ask that when he's already fighting a small guy. next card.

he is really afraid to get beat up and now that he got pacquiao riled up and frothing at the mouth mad, he knows he'll get brutalized worse than dela hoya.

    9. Floyd wants heavy gloves. Pac refused. He then realize that he will look stupid again for asking a heavy gloves when the fight is at 147. 8oz gloves for 147 is the standard. Floyd ok 8oz Gloves. next card.
    10. Demanded olympic style testing. And accused Pac of cheating. Pac agreed to 3 test. Floyd wants random. When it's random, there's a huge possibility that Pac can have blood drawn before the fight and Floyd 3 days before the fight. Sounds Fair? well that's "random" isn't it?
    11. Floyd thinks that people think he's smart for discovering Pac's dark secret, because he assumed that by Pac's refusal of the test, people would think that he is guilty.
    12. Floyd Insisted on random test hoping that Pac would refuse again. Because Floyd has no plans of fighting Pac anyways and feels that this is his chance to get out. People would think Pac is a cheater and Floyd ultimately becomes the hero without fighting.
    13. Pac file a lawsuit. Floyd says "Fack". Now what?

  • FloydHater 2 years ago

@blogista. Yes Floyd is afraid to lose his "0". You ask what is "0" compared to $40m? Simple, first of $40m is not even discovered until the rumor of Floyd fighting Pac. Without Pac $40m is just a fart in the air. Second, $40m is not a target price. He can fight and get $8m - $10m each as long as he doesn't lose that "0". With his boring fights, do you think people would still watch his fights if he doesn't have his "0" anymore? As far as I know, people watch him not because he's entertaining or undefeated, they watch him to see him lose or get knocked out. Yes, he's good. But people don't watch him because good. People watch Pac not because he's good, he is already good, but because he's entertaining. And every fight is better than the previous.

So yeah, HE IS AFRAID to lose that "0". Why did he retire without fighting elite welterweights if he not afraid to lose it?

if pacman-foreman goes thru, pacman-floyd fight is dead and buried. floyd insist to fight pacman at 154 as he first requested on early negotiations with all the advantages on him and surely pacman refuses then floyd bragging his legacy and accuse pacman of scared. this is the plan of floyd to wait pacman fight at 154 he does't want pacman at 147 he's scared. pacman's fight at 154 will be his last reconsidering his mother request to stop fighting and floyd's dream will backfire on him. pacman may not need $40m but floyd needs it badly so who's the big loser. floyd thinks he's brilliant but never read pacman's mind in vengeance not to reward him. fight with foreman is last for pacman and retires, he has nothing to prove anymore and tired fighting.

AND HE DID NOT EXPECT BEFORE THAT THE MAN WHO IS FAR BETTER THAN DELA HOYA WOULD ONE DAY BE HIS OR I SHOULD SAY HER ADVERSARY IN THE RING.
