Juan Manuel Marquez looks to cement his place as the best lightweight in the world this weekend as he once again takes on Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz, a man who he beat in their first encounter.
If he can get past Diaz, the next likely opponent for Marquez is Amir Khan, who Golden Boy have been keen to match up with the winner. At the same time though, Marquez has continually been publicly challenging Manny Pacquiao to a third fight ever since losing their second. Also Khan himself has a mandatory defense against Marcos Maidana to contend with at some point, and has plenty of other rivals at light welterweight.
So just what would the upside be for Pacquiao in taking on Marquez for a third time?
Firstly he could remove all doubt as to the first two results. There are still some fans who believe Marquez won both fights, and winning a trilogy fight would prove that he has moved past someone who was one of his most challenging opponents. Secondly, it would serve as a showcase for how far Pacquiao has come since his days as a lightweight. Any doubt over his welterweight credentials would be weakened if he could show obvious improvement over an opponent who gave him trouble in the past.
Perhaps as importantly, he would also have the chance to better the performance of his main rival Floyd Mayweather, who took on Marquez after his brief retirement. Many have used Mayweather's complete shutout of Marquez as the basis for predicting he would beat Pacquiao. If the fighting congressman could go one better and finish the Mexican warrior he would take this away. Not that it would make the fight between himself and Floyd any closer to happening, but it would make for a solid comparison against a common opponent.
Highlights from Pacquiao vs. Marquez II
Countering Marquez's lack of a welterweight record
The one major obstacle to Marquez ever getting a third shot at Pacquiao is the fact that he only has one fight as a welterweight, which was a one sided loss. If Golden Boy's plans come to fruition though he will probably be taking on WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan next. If he were to beat Khan he would have as much claim as anyone to another shot at Pacquiao. Add in the obvious marketing angle of Pacquiao looking for revenge for his Wild Card team mate and building up the fight would be easy.
Obviously the chances of Marquez beating Khan aren't that great, but stranger things have happened.
Besides anything else though, the first two fights were both great to watch. Can anyone honestly say that they wouldn't watch more of the same?
Fred Allen, Pittsburgh: "Make Marquez beat a decent welterweight before he calls out Pacquiao. Let him take on Berto, Mosley or someone like that first"
Roger Freeman, Philly: "I'm not even sure Marquez will beat Diaz, let alone Pacquiao or Khan. If Floyd won't fight next year though it would be a fun fight at least"
Talk of Alexander vs. Bradley makes it critical Amir Khan faces a credible opponent next

if marquez really has to prove that he beat pacquiao twice then so be it, but, take a 90/10 money split. he can then say see? i 'm not just after a great payday, i really just want to whup pacquiao's ass. then they can fight at 144 lbs.
marquez will be bludgeoned if and when they meet again. pac simply does not respect jmm's power. with a two fisted ammo plus a crafty gameplan, pac will make it seem all too easy. stop whining marquez and end your career on a positive note.
its obvious pacman avoiding marquez for 3rd fight.
Marquez will not get pass Diaz.
it would be disastrous for marquez if he were to fight pacquiao at welterweight. not only has pacquiao improved so much but at welterweight, he seems to have more power. pacquiao is no longer the same one handed slugger, he had developed his right as another deadly weapon and his speed seems to have improved also
Marquez-Diaz is nothing but a replay. Diaz will show aggressiveness in the first few rounds. His(Diaz) lack of defence will take a toll on him on the later round. Then came the knock down. Marquez by TKO on 9th.
Does he deserve a fight with Manny? I don't think he'll win. Not even close. But I sure want to see this fight. And I think his contribution to the boxing should be rewarded by fighting Pacman the third time. Yes, he deserve it not because he can win, but because he deserve a bigger paycheck....... than Margarito.
if jmm could make the weight at welter then maybe a fight could be made, roach wants this fight, jmm wants this fight, as far as the pacman is concerned, he was willing to fight jmm in the parking lot in las vegas just to shut him up, after telling jmm to talk to arum for a third fight.golden boy wants this fight too, so what they should do it.
Marquez will beat Diaz!
I would definitely pay for the trilogy.
PAC should after the margarito fight!!
The one person who definietly does not deserve a fight with Pacquiao is Cheato and that's the fight that your side wants so go suck the daily dick.
Marquez lost both fights... pac has nothing to prove... look at this scorecard Marquez was Knocked Down 4 - Pacquiao was Knocked Down 0.
Pac offerd him the fight but with smaller cut. he said he wanted more money..what? he looked realy bad in weltherweight div. anyhow, i would like to see that guy gets KOed. he is using the floyd tactic here. "if you want to see me KOed by Pac,for only 50 dollars PPV..."
It's would be an easy fight for Pacquiao if JMM will come up to welterwieght. Pacquiao will floor JMM very badly b4 the end of first round.
Marquez didn't think the man promoted himselves as the greatest of all tmie who battered him very badly is running scared to Pacquiao.
Yes to Marques VS Manny, it will be an exciting fight to watch, & also JMM deserves big pay check before retirement for good. Pacquiao also owe these other great Mexican boxers like Barrera,Morales, DelaHoya that makes him famouse.
there's is no match in 140/or 147 marquez vs.the p4p king Manny
A third fight will be a "nothing to lose, everything to gain" for marquez. I dont think he still deserved a third fight since pacman will not gain any legacy from beating marquez. Pacman is no longer the same man when they last met. He is alot stronger now. Marquez is just all about the money. He knows even if he gets beaten for the 3rd time, he will still go home with a pocket full of money. And i doubt marquez is willing to accept a minimal purse once pac agreed for the fight.
If the reason of marquez is only to prove that he is better than manny, then y dont he offer manny a purse split than manny cant reject. Marquez just want another more money before he retires, sacrificing himself for the sake of money. There's no more to prove for him since it was a clear win for manny for the very first fight, problem is one of the judge made a mistake from scoring.
@ trilogy, manny is not avoiding marquez. If he does, he should not let a 2nd bout between him and marquez. There are two things why this fight will not happen. 1st is that there is no more money on the trilogy. 2nd is that marquez will not accept a small amount of share
NO, Pacquiao already beat JMM twice and decked him four (4) times, but if they do PAC would decimate him at 147. I don't think PAC would go down to 135-140 though.
If there's a Marquez vs. Pacquiao 3, it'll be at 140 to 145. I don't see Pac scaling down to 135.
PacMan with his improved lethal right hand should knock out the pee-drinker from Mejico around the 10th round.
JMM is willing to drink pee of Oscar,Schaefer, and Floyd asuring him big payday by fighting Pacquiao.
Marquez deserves a trilogy with Pacquiao to zip his mouth. But Marquez has to accept a generous 30-70 purse split, otherwise 25% is all that he deserves.
Marquez want only the big bucks!!! Actually he knew that he's out of range by this time!! He's claiming two years before!! Remember that he'd never improved even drinking all his pea. While Pacquiao is on peak. How can you compare the old days to the present?
pac better give marquez a chance, atleast. Both fighters have a lot of heart and should just fun duking it out.
It is all Marquez's fault. He barely improve his resume.
Now he is fighting Diaz...again ...at 135 ????? Pacquiao is almost on 153 already......He is way behind...The only thing ahead are BAD DREAMERS.
Juan Manuel Marquez is done as a boxer. He just doesn't know it yet. Juan Diaz is going to beat the crap out of Marquez and Mayweather Jr is going to say it's because of him. There is no question about a third match because it can't happen.
This pee drinker doesn't learn. How many times would pacquiao has to beat him to convince him. Even if they fight each other a hundred times still Marquez will end up losing. If he really insists and so desperate to make a nice retirement money, I hope Pacquiao give him a 80/20 split for the pot and fight At 147 lbs. Just to shut him up.
Marquez is no longer worthy to fight Pacquiao for the third time because he was so stupid to let Mayweather bully him by just accepting the payment for fighting an over-the-limit weight Mayweather during the actual fight so his a!!! was decisively kicked without a chance to win. If he did the right thing in compelling Mayweather to honor the weight limit, he might have a chance to win that bout and become a worthy opponent of Pacquiao. He's stupidity should not be rewarded a chance for a third fight because Pacquiao wants to fight Mayweather and not fighters who are beaten by mayweather.
Didn't Marquez turn down a fight with Pacman in January after the talks broke down between Mayweather and before Clottey was official. Marquez or Goldenboy stated blood test required and refused the offer. Also, Marquez is way past his prime and should retire before he gets hurt by Khan, Bradley, Alexander, ...
Nope, Marquez is at the bottom of the list to me, nobody really wants to see that fight. Marquez made the wrong decision by fighting mayweather, thats what brought his status down. Hes gotta fight some bigger guys to earn an opportunity.
Boxing is a business and I feel whats hurting Marquez is the fights that hes fighting now days... Juan diaz is a decent fight but it is actually making marquez's status and reputation much lower now by taking fights like this.. It really is because you cannot match Pacman with Juan diaz, IT WOULD BE A JOKE! the gap between pac and juan diaz is way too far, get what im saying? If he wants a chance at pacman again he needs to fight opponents that pacman could actually have bouts with, Not waste his time by fighting people that are far from ever fighting pac.. Id love to see him fight any of the following: Berto, Mosley, Khan, Bradley, Cotto.. If he can fight these guys then that would most likely put him back as a viable opponent for pac again.
NO MAS!!! NO POINT!!! IS PACMAN GOING BACKWARD? FOR WHAT? WHEN THERE STILL A LOT OF BETTER OPPONENTS RATHER THAN MARQUEZ? DONT GIVE A MAN A DAMN ATTENTION... ITS POINTLESS FOR HIM TO FIGHT PACMAN BECOZ HE WAS NOT FIT AND NOT ABLE TO BRING PAC DOWN WHILE THAT CRYING MARQUEZ GOT 4X..IMAGINE THAT??? 4X KNOCKDOWN!!! I JUST PITY THAT MAN.
Mr. Heritage. Please don't tell me you're on the same page as your colleague, Mr. so-called d'Source Guillermo. Read up on his BLOG "Isn't Mayweather ducking Pacquiao the same thing as Pacquiao not giving Marquez a trilogy?" What is it with this Examiner.com fixation with Marquez VS Pacman trilogy? It's done like dinner and over with - F-I-N-I-T-O. Marquez already had his chance..TWICE. Is he the jilted girlfriend who's obsessed and wanting to stay with the PacMan because HE IS the true cash cow EVERY fighter wants to dance with? Please, Mr. Heritage, don't follow Mr. dSource.
Marqueaz again? He was saved the first fight because a bias judge scored the first round incorrectly. It was close the second time but still he got beaten. If Pacquiao wins the 150 pound limit, is Marquez going to go up that high? Manny is not going down in weight just to accommodate him, but rather add more weight in order to fight and challenge the heavier opponents. If he does that, it will be "timber!" ala Hatton.
Who is the Filipino cangrejo who is a sport writer in this forum?
TRILOGY FIGHT betwn MARQUEZ n PACQUIAO s not necessary. Both r GREAT FIGHTERS n der own way....I'll not support der nxt fight n case.
Why not Amir Khan vs The Pee Drinker?
Or Tim Bradley vs The Mexican Urinator?
Scott Heritage,Your question is,Does Marquez deserve a third fight with Pacquiao? The question could have been"Can Marquez go where Pacman is and fight him?"Marquez highest competitive weight is at 135 lbs. He's even slower and bloated at 142 lbs.DO YOU THINK MANNY SHOULD GO DOWN to 135 just to GIVE WAY FOR A REMATCH?The second question is more appropriate if Marquez could do it at 147 or even at 145 why not then?Business wise will it bring Bob Arum and Pacquiao a good gain in return?
LET THE JMM FIGHT PACQUIAO FOR THE THIRD TIME... LET HIM RETIRE FOREVER IN BOXING... DUN WAIT FOR AMIR KHAN TO FIGHT HIM COZ AMIR KHAN WILL DROP HIM LIKE MANNY DID...
The fight between Juan Diaz and Marquez, Diaz was winning, he got too aggressive. Marquez was clearly losing.I don't think Marquez is worthed anotherfight. Floyd was not that aggressive on Marquez coz he knows Marquez can hurt him. Juan diaz overdid it and lose. Pacquiao was hurt a lot but cause of his aggressive, looks stupid for Manny but he is a fighter that fearless, that's why he is a very exciting fighter, maybe to some expert will say that Manny lacks the skill, which I think is a valid opinion. But for me, the more you show your athletic skill and power, the more you should be respected. Look at Kobe, Jordan(skill first & power), Tyson(purely strength), Foreman (strength and size), Ali (skill, tactics and power),Duran (fearless & power), etc. But Floyd just skill and tactics. It would had been more admirable to see Floyd shows some respect to fans, but for him it's just showmanship and business.

He held the title until January 23, 2009, vacating it after defeating Steven Luevano for the organization's featherweight championship.
he needs to prove himself in the light welterweights first, even ricky hatton might knock him out now
It would be an even match at Jr. Lightweight with a dehydrated Manny. At welterweight, Manny will knock him out in the 1st round.
Either JMM wants a big payday or been drinking too much p!ss!!!!
This is not 130-135 lbs anymore. He might have been better in "little league" but now Pacquiao is in the "big league". JMM
excuse against Floyd was he really tried his best knowing he was only after a big payday. My advice to JMM is if you can'y bring the speed with you to welterweight like Pacquiao did, do even dare to try. Floyd brittle hand knock you down, can you imagine Pacquiao's brutal punch can do to you???? Ask Hatton!!!!
I watch Marquez drinking "P I S S" in this website....it's kinda odd cause mostly females does this kind of thing!!!!
Why not marquez deserve it. I would rather see marquez fight pacquiao than margarito and pretty sure alot of people does also...
mayweather deceived marquez to fight him at a higher weigth divison and then cheat him of over to 2lbs overweight during actual fight yet he did not even knockdown marquez. for me that alone is not a complete shotout. remember this marquez was knockdown by pacman 4 times during their previous 2 encounters and if not for the bias and stupid intention to save marquez by one of the judges, (and in fact this judge admitted later that he scored incorrectly, marquez has already lost twice to pacman. so i don't think a third figtht is not anymore necessary.
crazy to suggest that marquez can beat the likes of clottey, cotto, hatton...JMM stop whinning when pac was still unknown you refuse to fight him after your first encounter citing money split, now pac is way bigger than you figurtively and literally so suffer your misplace ego of the past...
Haha! Pac will kill JMM if they'll ever face again now at 147 even at 140. JMM Vs khan or JMM Bradley First before get another crack to Pac.
