Can Edwin Valero become the next Manny Pacquiao?

Valero passes his first big test (AP Photo)

Edwin Valero proved many of his critics wrong last night, with a dominating performance over Antonio DeMarco. There were even comparisons to an early Pacquiao by the commentating team, which later proved to be unfounded as Valero also showed off some solid boxing skills not seen since the early days of his career.

Although he has said in the past that he wants to fight Pacquiao in the future, realistically that probably won't happen. It would take Valero a couple of years at least to get to welterweight and to beat a decent enough opponent to sell the Pacquiao fight. By then Pacquiao might well be retired, and the current gap in skills between the two would still need to be addressed for it to even be a decent fight.

Stephen Gallagher, Greensburg PA: "Valero is the man! He showed last night why he deserves a shot at Manny Pacquiao. He's better than Pacquaio used to be and he's getting as good as Pacquiao is now!"

Valero did show a lot of improvement in last night's fight, but he's still a long way off being where Pacquiao is right now. Some of the ensuing hype after the fight was undoubtedly from the uninspiring performance from Antonio De Marco.

Billy Frye, Pittsburgh PA: "I'm still not sold on Valero, he got his 27th stoppage but DeMarco gave up on the fight after about the 5th round. Maybe he forgot he was supposed to come on stronger in the later rounds instead of just standing there getting hit"

Miguel Mencia, State College PA: "Valero beat DeMarco, but who's DeMarco ever beaten? He's getting a lot of praise for beating someone who was never that good in the first place"

DeMarco was a decent win for Valero, whether or not he has an excellent record himself or not. Valero has been accused of only fighting old men in the past, and regardless of how one sided the fight turned out to be, DeMarco is at least a young and ranked opponent.

I think Valero regardless of just how good he turns out to be does have the makings of a star. That is provided he can gain access to a big fan base in the United States, which for Valero might be problematic. Firstly there is the failed medical after a motorbike crash several years ago. This rules out some states, but at the moment allows for fights in Texas. In the past this might have been a closed case, but there is a lot more room for re-testing these days.

The second obstacle is the fact that he has a DUI charge in Texas, meaning gaining entry into the United States by itself is a problem. This might be insurmountable for a normal person, but with a lot of money at stake and a marketable commodity like Valero, this problem might only be a temporary one.

Scott Holst, Pittsburgh PA: "Valero will never fight in most of the U.S anyway because of his brain problem, and for sure having a tattoo of an enemy of the state like Hugo Chavez doesn't help anyone's cause"

Valero himself thinks his problem stems more from the fact that he supports Huge Chavez than his drunk driving, but in either case, being tattooed with a socialist leader can't be that helpful to anyone entering the United States. I don't think hes been named an official enemy of the state, but even so relations with Venesuela are frosty to say the least.

    Let me guess,

The Fraud fans will somehow make Eddy V out to be a roider as well. Well, why not Fraud fans. You idiots seem to think that when someone is victorious and shows skill through hard work and determination. Suddenly, their juicing, roiding. Then we'll hear all of the Mayweathering from Fraud fans to discredit this champ...

He may have the talent like Manny Pacquio, but he does not have the values and character to be one of the greatest boxers of all time the way Pacman has achieved!

Valero is miles away from Pacquiao's level!

Valero hasn't fought elite fighters belonging to the top 30 pound-for-pound list!

Valero must win first over boxers like Marquez, Katsidis, Juan Diaz or David Diaz!

DeMarco and other other boxers defeated by Valero were all relatively unknowns or still very raw!

A fight with Pac would be explosive. Problem is, Valero is a lightweight and Pac is a welterweight. They could probably meet halfway at Jr. welterweight. I'm sure Valero would take that fight, but I dunno about Pac; he's at the tail end of a ATG career with only 2-3 fights left and his team seems interested only in big fights. It's impossible for a name like Valero to get a shot when names like Mosley, Mayweather or Williams are around Pac's weight class. If he had started to take on Hall of Famers 2 years ago he would have built a legend for himself instead of just living off notoriety. Unfortunately, even if he started doing that now, Pacman will be retired by the time his name and weight are big enough to earn a shot.

As the pacman said all valero has fought are taxi drivers. If manny pacquiao and valero are on thesame weight division, valero would not last 3 rounds against paquiao. He should fight soto or jmm stop fighting taxi drivers.

Valero needs to beat more marquee fighters if he is to stand a chance against Pacquiao at this time. Sure, he beat De Marco, who is a good fighter, but not an elite fighter. But Valero is on the right track. He should keep winning against top-tier opponents (e.g., Guzman, Sotto, JMM, Campbell, Bradley), just like what Pacquiao did in his meteoric rise from obscurity to mega-stardom. If Valero manages to do so, his dream fight with Manny might yet come into fruition.

Why most of the boxing rising stars aiming Pacquiao. Is fighting Pacquiao a jackpot? Julio Cesar Chavez Jr once aiming Pacquiao, yuri Foreman, Bradley, Velaro..and others want a piece of Pacquiao.

Why Pacquiao? Why not Mayweather? Had they consider Mayweather a jackpot too? Oh, this will make Mayweather more jealous. He will think he is a jokepot.

valero will never have a chance to fight pacquiao... first he must fight marquez, de la hoya, hatton and cotto and will see how he fight against these gentlemen. Valero only fight with those who have a tiny talent inside the ring. Its not bad to have a dream but his ambition could kill him so quick inside the ring.

First, this fight will gonna happen because of its marketability. The skill thing is just a second, even with Valero's skill is much less compared to Pacman if he proves that he has a great maektability, this fight will be on.
We should all know that boxing is business!
Second, if this fight will happen now, Valero will surely loss his "O" why? see how Valero fight, he always bring down his guard and no footwork as the Pacman, surely he will be eating those ghost punch from Pacquaio. Valero need more fine tuning and that is fight first those elite fighters of the lightweight & light welter division. This man deserves all the credit but oviosuly not against Pacquaio at this time. Good luck Valero!
