Andre Ward stuns Mikkel Kessler, wins on points after cut stoppage

Andre Ward stunned the boxing world just moments ago by defying the odds to defeat Mikkel Kessler in the Super Six Boxing Classic.

Kessler was cut on several occasions in the fight, a mixture of punches and head clashes, which eventually stopped the fight. Because the fight was stopped due to a cut caused by a clash of heads, the fight went to the scorecards after the doctor called it off. All three judges scored the fight for the new champion, and rightly so.

From the offset Ward kept Kessler guessing by switching his stance and using his jab to keep out of the way from the Dane.

Kessler  struggled to find his rhythm and was forced to look for the knockout toward the end of the fight. At the end of one of the rounds Kessler told his corner that he couldn't see, although they sent him back in telling him he needed the knockout anyway.

Kessler said after the fight that he felt home refereeing as well as deliberate head butts and rabbit punches from Ward were what cost him the fight. Clearly most of the head butts were accidental, and some were caused by Kessler himself struggling with the timing of his shots.  Head butts aside though Kessler struggled with Ward and was taken out of his element by the quick American. The judges scores were 98-92,  97-93 and 98-92 again and with it Andre Ward takes the WBA super middleweight title.

Abraham still leads the tournament standings due to getting a knockout over Jermain Taylor, but Ward should now be the favorite to win the tournament. Ward next takes on Jermain Taylor, who is reportedly not retiring until after the tournament is over. Mikkel Kessler next takes on the Carl Frotch

Whoa!! SOG wins. Mikkel's my favorite MW/SMW, but Ward just took it away. The classier guy won, and there's no shame in it.

sad to say what kessler said about the head butt has some degree of truth in it. another factor which the referee did not do anything about was how ward kept holding on to kessler and there were instances when the referre was telling them to break up and no punches, ward would hit kessler during the break. so honestly ward may have won anyway but the way he won it, i was not impressed.

ward-----bigger than pac man-----ur dreamin son. don't get to excited big boy--ward won a head butt ordeal. ward deserves the win, but he did not beat kessler-- ward is sloppy with is punches, meaning ; he jumps in with shots, rushes in with his head when- he doesnt no what to do------ok-- he won-- ok- he is champ--- but you have a long ways to go and with that - that belt can be taken away very easy by dirrell--------i dont see taylor doin it-- he is a mess. i said it then and ill say it now-- ward is not a marque fighter-------pac man status--- no way- dream dream dream. ward head butted that guy five times-- do we give warnings for that anymore

dont count kessler out of anything-- ok he lost one. kessler needs to listen to his corner who told him round after round to double the jab and double the right== kessler also needs to be aware to make the adjustments needed when fighting a punching rabbit-------wards style is easy to figure out-----combinations from lateral positions-- double up on jabs and rights-- u got em. mr journeyman-----it was not class that won the fight-- kessler was never hurt-----never on his way out. the two cuts were head butts from ward diving in with his head -- round after round==========and not one warning=======c=====mon
