Manny Pacquiao talks lawsuits and Malignaggi

Dan Rafael of ESPN reported yesterday that Manny Pacquiao will file defamation lawsuits against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and some of his associates over accusations of steroid use. The report also indicated his promoter Bob Arum will pursue an alternate plan to defend Pacquiao’s title against a completely undeserving Paulie Malignaggi in the event negotiations with team Mayweather come to an unsuccessful conclusion.

The proposed lawsuits as well as the alternate fight plan are completely unacceptable and should severely tarnish Manny Pacquiao’s legacy in the event the fight with Mayweather does not come to fruition.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his representatives want to ensure without a doubt that Manny Pacquiao, a man who has moved up from 108 pounds to 147 pounds over his career without any diminishment in power or speed, is not using performance enhancing drugs. To provide such assurances, Mayweather representatives demanded Pacquiao submit to Olympic style drug testing, which is more thorough and random than testing required by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

This is a reasonable request, considering the magnitude of this fight and concerns of the Mayweather camp. Having conclusive evidence both men are clean of such drugs is fair and adds to a level playing field. Justified or not, Pacquiao’s refusal to take the Olympic style drug testing will only increase speculation that he has something to hide, which is the exact opposite of what he wants.

Further fueling the speculation will be the fact that Manny Pacquiao stands to make an incredibly large purse from this bout; by some accounts upwards of $40 million. It may take the Filipino star somewhere in the neighborhood of five additional fights to make that kind of money. The prospect of walking away and fighting Paulie Malignaggi due to a flap over drug testing will not go over well with the public to say the least and once again adds credence to the theory Pacquiao is hiding something.

Now, if we are to believe the Pacquiao camp’s side of the story, it really all comes down to their fighter not wanting to have blood withdrawn from his body within thirty days of the fight. Does that seem logical at all? You decide for yourselves, but the rationale given on his behalf will not diffuse speculation about the use of performance enhancing drugs.

If Floyd Mayweather Jr. or any of his associates have made claims that Manny Pacquiao has actually used banned substances to give him an edge over opponents, they should stop because none seem to have any direct evidence of such usage. On the other hand, Pacquiao needs to stop the talk of lawsuits and find a way to satisfy Mayweather’s concerns.

However, should negotiations completely break down, any talk of Manny Pacquiao facing Paulie Malignaggi or Floyd Mayweather Jr. taking on Matthew Hatton needs to stop. These opponents are undeserving of the opportunity and a complete waste of time, as there are plenty of others from the lightweight through welterweight division who are far more worthy; the winner of Shane Mosley vs. Andre Berto, Joshua Clottey and Timothy Bradley just to name a few.

    Pacman is really scared to fight Mayweather. If he was clean then so what about the testing. They can come to an agreement on this but to call off the fight and talk about suing is a cop out. They are doing everything to avoid this fight.

    ooking at the various polls – Manny is still very much supported e.g. between 60% – 80%. The Public and the casual/hardcore fans are an intelligent bunch . . and their collective wisdom will not be swayed with baseless insinuations coming from camps (i.e. Mayweather Camp & Golden Boy) that have more than a fair share of questionable/bad actions. Total hypocrisy to these guys who try to espouse the "paragon of virtues" when their actions in the past, makes a mockery of those virtues! Its good to see some writers also stand up for Manny . . they have covered Manny through the years - - 6 or more years here in the US where we come to witness a guy with hardly any defense . . to have a superior in and out movement . . to developing a superlative right hand (i.e. if manny was into this special juice, why work and train so hard? . . why go through the rigors of developing a right hand (in the past year or so)?, when you have the pop to KO Mike Tyson).

    Kudos to the fans and writers who demand substantiated proof (i.e. not just an allegation . . and also given that Manny has agreed to meet half-way Mayweather for 3 blood tests, beyond the Nevada/legal requirement) before making an accusation. Lets get this fight on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Bottom line: Some boxing writers right now (not mentioning Colin here) are trying to say a "one way street" on HGH, however, if you look at the medical facts . . its not "conclusive" and likely much is to be learned and studied about these drugs. However, No amount of drugs will (1) improve your skills and strategy in the ring e.g. if this drug made everybody smarter or gave them a new fountain of skills, everybody will be using it!; (2) the idea of bulking up, c'mon - PacMan is known and recognize for his "speed", not his bulk body or armor muscles. If you ask me, bulking up, would actually sacrifice your speed . . so isn't this an anti-thesis of the Pacquiao fast machine;

    (3) in this high stakes negotiation where each side attempts to get the better deal i.e. Mayweather's request was answered "half-way" by Pacquiao - 3 blood tests (after fight announcement, before 30 days and just after the fight), these blood tests are not required for professional/competitive boxing in Nevada (Las Vegas), but Pacquiao offered this. The test just after the fight, should provide conclusive and reliable evidence that meet Olympic standards if Pac took anything! (these drugs stay in the body at least a week, depending of quantity taken); (4) Let's take a look at the messenger of this "unsubstantiated allegations" - Mayweathers camp - goodness! these guys are not the bastion of honesty and purity, heck, they could produce a reality series with their numerous court cases, run-ins with the law, tax problems, what have you.

    We don't know whether this fight will push through or not . . However, the ascent of Manny to the top of the boxing world was duly documented in 24/7/media outlets/stories that show: (a) Manny took long hours in the gym, working on a strategy, improving his right hand to be as good as the left hand i.e. if this guy was really on super-performance drugs - why waste too many hours in the gym when you have super strength? why improve your right hand, when with the aid of this wonder drug, all you need is an ultra-power left?; (b) Manny has not shown the behavior of a guy in super-drugs who is all "about me . . me . . i can do this easily". Instead, if you ask Manny - he will just say - "I will try my best to do well, hopefully to win for the Filipino people" or "give God glory". I have not heard any of those humble words from all the drug convicted top athletes;

    and (c) Finally, no amount of "Mayweather or his minions propaganda" nor articles from writers that quick to judge on unwarranted accusations - - Society and the fans (casual/hard-core) will collectively in its wisdom make their own decisions - and vote empathically with their wallets (e.g. PPV/gate attendance). That will be the definitive statement!.

You obviously didn't mention it for an obvious reason i think mainly to accused Manny of wrongdoings and to further enhanced your agenda. Eddie B,
    Get out of the tree and start shedding. You have no idea what you are talking about. It's Mayweather who is scared of Pacman trying all excuses to get out of the initial contract they proposed to bluff Pacman. They esp. selected the March 13 date (which they thought Pacman's will not agree bec. ofhis ear injury with Cotto fight)But less than 5 minutes into Arum detailing the details Pacman agreed right away. Now they are trying everything to get out.

    Pacquiao needs to get compensated for the damages that was caused by GBP and Mayweather first before he fights the coward.
    BE wised Manny. Mayweather is now desperate. He only had one fight in 2009 and most of his income was taken by the IRS. Make him sweat, make him wait or I were you, I don't give them the satisfaction. Fight someone else or take a little break you deserve it. March 13 is too soon anyway after your fight with Cotto. Mayweather didn't think you would have called his bluff..

    "On the other hand, Pacquiao needs to stop the talk of lawsuits and find a way to satisfy Mayweather’s concerns." - Why NOT the MW Camp raise this concern to the NEVADA Sports Commission? Who are they (MWs camp) to dictate Pacquiao of what to do to help them with their concern?! Why Give their OWN problems to their opponent?! after all they are the only one who DISRESPECTS the NEVADA SPORTS COMMISSION by demanding such independent drug testing! Why not just request NEVADA to Amend their system (of over 4decades!)? MWs camp is trully just making this fight difficult to happen

    To the writer, it was never about the blood testing but the unfairness of this whole matter. This is the same test all the fighters have been given too and SATISFIED with their results. But you must understand there is a hidden agenda with the Mayweathers and Golden Boy. I find it strange and alarming that it easily people got manipulated or duped into believing that Manny might be doping. Even without any solid evidence, Manny is being made into an example. It seems compliance to Mayweathers demands to some people is resonable. Well Golden Boy had that same problem when Judah wanted Mosely to take blood test but Golden Boy CEO Schaefer said and this quoted from Association Press - "We are not going to do other tests than the Nevada Boxing Commission requires. The fact is Shane is not a cheater and does not need to be treated as one."- Richard Schaefer CEO of Golden Boys. Associated press.

    Richard Schaefer thinks USDA is his property. Not only does he demand that USDA do the test, but also he demands that he have a say on what to do with Pacquiao's blood.

    For me, Shaefer and his cohorts are common prostitutes pimping a media-hyped Mayweather, and sacrificing Pacquiao and killing boxing in the process.

    In the media's part, they are turning a blind eye on this travesty because a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight serves their interest. They are pushing for the fight no matter how Floyd screws everybody from behind because for them, any news is good news.

    They are just foxes in sheep's clothing.

    Now, Schaefer has decided to be a staunch advocate of anti-doping in boxing. Oh, really sir? After refusing to subject Mosley to the same test, you are now a voice of blood testing in sport?

    To Richard Shaefer, you have no moral ascendancy to even talk about sportsmanship in scrabble. In this Pacquiao-Mayweather fight fiasco, you are not a part of the solution - you are the problem. So, do yourself a favor and jump a bridge of your choice.

Mayweather is nothing now, he's just a forgotten champion who wants to have a share in Pacquiao's pie. Filipino's are diverse people. Their belief in superstition are so deep specially if works for them. So, you cannot blame him for that. But some people use it for their advantage.

    Get your facts straight. Pacquiao is opposed to the suggested drawing of blood 48, 36 and 24 hours before fight night as suggested by mayweathers which is ridiculous. roach is ok with random urine tests in addition to blood drawings up to 5 days before the fight. Latest news says roach is ok up to 3 days before the fight. Your just another journo without a clue. Do your research so you dont publish crap like this. Remember we are in deep recession and incompetence like this will point the axe in your direction.

    BREAKING NEWS ! ! ! MAYWEATHER BACKS OFF !
    You guys should read ESPN's Dan Rafael's article how the Mayweathers eat their bluffs.
    To Oscar 'the clown face' Dela Hoya; To Maglinaggi 'the clown'; To Floyd Sr. 'the chimp' and to all the fans who sided with the Mayweathers that Manny should take the blood test:
    Now that your boy Floyd blinks, who do you think won the first round, ha?
    Of course, it's Manny.
    There's another article out there that explains how Richard 'Cheaper', the Golden Boy honcho, did a 180 degrees turn and ratted out the Mayweathers. What a bunch of characters and losers. They think Manny is not capable of pulling a quick one on them. After Manny bluffs back at them, they all lost their poker faces and their chips too. Now they can only say, "YES SIR, YES SIR". So next time, if you want to bully him, do not underestimate the li'l filipino guy who is seating under the durian tree because you'll never know what will happen if you get too close to his skin.
