In recent months there has been much talk about a boxing match between the two top fighters in the sport—Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Unfortunately it’s been just talk, and boxing fans wonder if this fight will ever take place.
In MMA there have been discussions about a possible future “superfight” between the two pound-for pound best fighters in the world—Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva. Although this fight won’t be taking place in the imminent future, since Silva just defended his Middleweight title for a record seventh time, and St. Pierre will be facing Josh Koscheck in December as he puts his Welterweight belt on the line, let’s take a look at how this superfight would match up.
Anderon Silva was only 1:50 seconds away from losing his Middleweight belt to surprising contender Chael Sonnen this past Saturday night at UFC 117, but the bottom line is that he came back and won. Sonnen dominated nearly every minute of the fight prior to Silva’s triangle choke submission, but like the champion he is, he found a way to pull off the victory.
Silva has undoubtedly been one of the best fighters in all of MMA, having won a UFC record 12 consecutive fights, but many question if he still has the killer instinct he has displayed in years past. His past few fights have certainly been less than spectacular—though he did emerge victoriously—so matching him up with a fighter with the caliber of Georges St. Pierre would be the ultimate test.
Current Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre has also been racking up the wins; since winning the undisputed Welterweight title against Matt Serra in 2008, he has successfully defended his belt four times, winning over BJ Penn, Jon Fitch, Thiago Alves and Dan Hardy.
Whereas Silva has looked like he has reached a plateau, St. Pierre continues to show improvement with each fight. Both warriors have fantastic hand speed and agility, accompanied with an incredible ground game. But I give the edge the overall edge to St. Pierre due to his extraordinary training and conditioning as well as the fact that he has shown no signs of complacency since becoming the Welterweight Champion. Each time he steps into the octagon he strives to put on a better performance than his last.
But at the same time I can’t rule out Silva; championship fighters rise to the occasion when they go to battle with the best, and there’s a reason Silva has maintained his title for so long—he is a championship fighter.
For now it is just speculation how this UFC superfight would play out, but expect to see it take place sometime in early 2011.

Georges St. Pierre...the reign of Silva is over
Georges St pierre didnt show the killer instinct against Dan hardy...if he had he would've finished him with arm bar. but he's a good sport, not looking to hurt oppoennt...it would be a great fight, but i got st. pierre...in 2007, I'd have Silva
Silva would rise to the occasion and be on top of his game, knocking Pierre out like he did to Rich Franklin...but fight won't be happnin n e time soon tho
