Can someone explain to this writer why a man who cheated in a way that could have killed another fighter, should get another chance? When Antonio Margarito was busting up the face of Miguel Cotto, everyone at the time was amazed at how dominating that defeat was. Cotto looked like his heart was ripped out of his chest, he looked battered, beaten, and defeated. Then we learned that Margarito had used something in his wraps that turns wraps into plaster. Cotto was being hit by a cast all night and that my friends is not only cheating, but it could have killed him.
If a fighter can't win based on his own merits and talents, then so be it. To cheat in a manner that could have ended someone's life? This is not an offense that should warrant any second chance in boxing. Miguel Cotto hasn't looked the same since that fight against Margarito.
This writer asked several people for their opinion on Antonio Margarito. One such person was none other than the great "Sugar" Shane Mosley. When Shane was asked if he thought if perhaps Margarito didn't know about the wraps he said, "No way, there is no way that Margarito didn't know what was up. A fighter knows what is going on his hands before a fight."
This was the topic that this writer brought to the table on Superbowl Sunday as I toured the city of Jackson, MS. I asked some of the fans in the local sports bars what their thoughts were on the return of Antonio Margarito. As the New Orleans Saints were capturing their first Superbowl Championship, some of the fans weighed in on Margarito. Tom Nelson, a boxing fan from Jackson, Mississippi isn't happy about it, "This guy not only cheated, but what he did could have killed another fighter. No way should he be allowed to ever step foot inside of the ring again."
When you compare what Margarito did with what the great baseball player Pete Rose did, you scratch your head. Rose gambled on baseball, yes a bad thing to do. Rose is banned from baseball for life. Rose was not only banned from his sport for life, but he is also banned from ever being elected into the Hall of Fame. What Pete Rose did would not have killed anybody. What Antonio Margarito did could have killed a man.
The problem with boxing is that there is no individual authority that can overrule state commissions. The sport needs one governing body that can vote on such a thing as letting a man return to the sport that cheated. Who cheated in a fashion that could have killed another fighter I might add. Some may say that Margarito deserves another chance. If Miguel Cotto would have been killed, or hurt in a way that impacted his way of life forever, he wouldn't have had a second chance.

Legally he didnt use the loaded gloves against mosley. There is no proof what so ever that he used plaster against Cotto because it wasnt caught. Everyone in boxing is pretty much a cheater including mosley, trinidad, vargas, even floyd who uses xylocane,etc. I think he should get another chance to prove everyone wrong. Floyds' bodyguard fired a shot aimed at a childhood acquaintance of Floyd after the two had an argument. This is a thousand times more serious than Margaritos' case.

Before making such strong feelings and such an emphatic opinion public it would be good to find out as much as possible about the specific wraps in question. Mosley saw and held them and said they felt like normal wraps. Before someone is banned for life you should at least test them (punchbag for some time etc) to see what happens, and if sweat does harden them, by how much. Its someones livelihood at stake here so i wouldnt call for a ban without having very solid information.

Love your columns Brad, But based on your logic, FLOYD should also be banned. What's the difference between having plaster of paris, a cement like substance placed over two digits and having your Hands Shot up to numb all ten digits of your hands to make them like unto concrete and hence able to punch through concrete without even feeling it? Xylocaine may not seem to be a PED at first because it doesn't add to muscle cell size or increasing Oxygen in the Red Blood Cells, but it STILL is AN ENHANCEMENT that gives you an incredible advantage. How many fighters have lost fights because they suffered a hand injury during the fight?
HELL, if Clottey would have injected Xylocaine on the night of his fight with Margarito, He likely would have won that fight, which he was winning until the hand injury. So Plaster of Paris versus XYLOCAINE, WHat's the difference? As for me I'd rather be hit with plaster of Paris than hands numbed with Xylocaine.
I think Margarito should be given a chance to box again. He served his suspension for 1 year and the fact that illegal wrapping was found before the fight, hence it gives him a mitigating circumstance in this case. I'm not a fan of Margarito at all, however, we should consider also some boxers who used illegal drugs to enhance their boxing supremacy like Floyd, a user of Xylocaine which could also kill a boxer and Mosley, who admitted before the grand jury of steroid use. Since Mosley forgave Margarito, who are we then not to give Margarito a chance?
Well, that Mosley. It is possible that you don't know what they are using to wrap your hand. If you're a fighter and you train to fight, I'm sure there's only one thing in your mind at the time they are wrapping your hands and that is to focus on your opponent. You and Mosley are not Margarito. I don't like Margarito but you always have to assume that he's innocent until proven guilty. His trainer confessed that he did it, but he never said that Margarito knew about it. That's a pretty valid statement, considering that he's going to down with it. Usually people tend to point fingers so that they don't go down alone. Do you know what I'm saying?
The best thing that you should do, is to write a petition to the commission about this. If you feel like it's wrong to let Margarito fight again, then tell the commission. And while you're at it, you should also write a petition to ban Xylocaine or other drugs that numbs your hand. It's dangerous to both fighters.
If the gayness lord Floyd Mayweather doesn't want to fight anyone without undergoing olympic style drug test, the commission should start banning the drug xylocaine or any other drug that numbs your hand. because it's a danger to both fighters. This is the one & only "Tony Margacheato." I knew what I was doing, I cheated in the Cotto fight. I knew I wasn't a good fighter, so I did what Roberto Duran & so many other Latinos did. I put plaster in my gloves. And yes, I've even done this in sparring. I broke a guy's orbital bone at the Wild Card Gym in L.A. and never came clean with it. And YES, I would've continued using plaster in all my fights if I hadn't gotten caught. I'm just your typical W_____K fighter trying to get over and not play fair. What some of the boxing media has been talking about was the old Margarito who probably no longer exists today. What we're seeing now is a newer and more cleansed Margarito. True, he may have done something really bad but that's all in the past. Also, he didn't get to use his cheat in the Mosley bout. The idea that he had loaded gloves in the Cotto fight is merely speculation.
True, as those anti-Margarito have been saying, the Mexican "could have" killed or at least seriously injured a fighter. I can't remember if it was Joe Santiago or Evangelista Cotto who was inside Margarito's dressing room detailed to watch how Margarito's hand was being wrapped. It was clearly shown on that specific video that somebody from Cotto's camp was watching how Margarito's hands were wrapped. Cotto's camp was clearly satisfied that Margarito was clean during that fight that's why nothing was heard from Cotto's camp after the discovery of illegal wrapping on Mosley-Margarito's fight. Cotto's camp will look stupid if they complain about Cotto's fight with Margarito because somebody from their own camp gave the go-ahead signal. You should see that video.

But, I think on the cotto fight, we cannot say that he wore loaded gloves there since he was not caught. though those assumptions may be valid, but it is always fair to consider a man innocent until proven guilty.
