Benefit concerts planned for Nashville flood victims

As Nashville begins to dig out from under the massive flooding that crippled the city over the last weekend, the entertainment industry that is the lifeblood of Nashville’s economy is beginning to assess the damages and move forward. A number of benefit concerts have been scheduled in the Nashville area to assist those who have been displaced by the floods.

On May 5, the scheduled Frayed Knot in the Lot concert featuring Cowboy Mouth, Weekend Jimmy and the Easy Party, and the El Dorados has been turned into a relief concert. Dog and cat food, canned goods, and money donations will be collected at the door. The Frayed Knot is located at 201 21st Avenue S.

The Mercy Lounge will also hold a benefit concert on May 5 featuring a number of local acts. These include Paper Route, How I Became the Bomb, The Dozen Dimes, and Hillbilly Casino. 100% of donations at this concert will go to Hands on Nashville, which is organizing volunteers to help with the clean up. The Mercy Lounge is located at 1 Cannery Row.

On Saturday, May 8, The End will host a benefit concert featuring Spanish Candles, Powerbrrrd, Bad Cop, and Diarrhea Planet. The End is located at 2219 Elliston Place.

On Sunday, May 9, Rocketown will hold a 10 act benefit concert featuring Heavy Cream, Pujol, Ben Steine’s Money, So Jazzy, Diarrhea Planet, Goodbye Apathy, Alcina, and Stephen Keech. The show is free but attendees are encouraged to donate money to the flood relief in lieu of ticket prices. Rocketown is located at 522 5th Avenue South.

While not technically a benefit concert, the Nashville Symphony has announced that the Christopher Cross concert scheduled for last week and cancelled because of the flood will be re-held as a free concert at the Metro Courthouse on Friday, May 7 at 8:00 PM. "People have lost homes, and some have lost their lives in the recent flooding," said Alan D. Valentine, President and CEO of the Nashville Symphony. "Music is what we do, and we wanted to present this concert, against all the odds and challenges, as a way to help people begin the healing process, as a way to help get our community on the road to recovery."

If you can’t attend these concerts but still wish to help, the American Red Cross is accepting donations for the Nashville flood relief. Text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10.

I know Bonnaroo always gives to charity in Coffee County. Perhaps they can make changes to that and send it to the hardest hit areas statewide.

So glad you covered these great efforts. Hope you don't mind, but I thought I'd also mention two other fundraising efforts.....Don't forget tonight's televised flood relief telethon featuring Vince Gill and Friends on Channel 4 from 7-10 Thursday. Also, while not a benefit concert exactly, the national touring company of A Chorus Line, currently playing TPAC, was so moved by what they arrived in Music City to witness, that they are ending each show with a call for donations from theatre goers, in lieu of their usual Equity Fights AIDS donation drive.
