Recap: 10 tips for a great shindig

1. The most important element of the party is the guests.

2. The most important dish to serve is the one that the majority of the world can eat. Think baba ganoush, a colorful chopped salad, or a fabulous olive oil (with herbs and spices) as a dip for bread.

3. Be a good conversationalist and try to talk to as many people as you can.

4. Don't drink too much, and never get out of control, especially at your own party!

5. Always have a lot of ice.

6. Keep food and drinks at opposite sides of the room so your party has lots of movement.

7. Don't serve gooey, drippy sauces near expensive rugs or furniture. Don't serve red wine near white sofas. Keep some club soda and stain remover on hand, just in case.

8. Select music to match the theme: steel drum music for a pool party, Hawaiian music for a luau, or classic rock for a outdoor barbecue. Music is an important element of most parties. Keep the music upbeat and "mass appeal."

9. Keep the conversation "party lite." It's a party, not a debate.

10. Read everything else I've had to say about parties this month!

I've not heard the idea of keeping food and drink at opposite ends of the room to promote movement/circulation--I like that!

Loved #6 keeping the food and drinks separate. So true, I usually make my bar outside while the food is inside. Definitely helps keep part of the crowd outside and less congestion in the kitchen area.
