Party manners 101: food limitations

You’re going to a party and you are: gluten-intolerant; on a diet; a vegan; kosher; deathly allergic to nuts; or just a very picky eater.

It is not rude to simply bring something that you can eat, that can also be shared. Bringing a big chopped salad would be a lot less awkward than trying to explain the extent of your food limitations. Personally, I can’t see how anyone would perceive that as rude, but just to be safe, you should let your hostess know that you plan on bringing along something to share. As someone who plays hostess a lot, I wouldn’t ask people to bring food, but would graciously accept if they offered!

DUH! Some people are so CLUELESS. I've been to parties and barbecues where a guest sat hungry and stewed because there was nothing they could eat. I didn't even feel bad biting into my juicy burger because how simple would it have been for the vegetarian to bring along a package of boca burgers? Yes, a great hostess might of have the bocas in anticipation of a vegetarian, however, it's not her responsibility.

As a kid, I don't remember ever seeing or hearing issues about vegetarian diets, food allergies, lactose intolerance, etc. People just sat down and ate. Not meaning to insult anyone, but it didn't seem like people had to send out 'food questionnaires' before planning a menu. Great suggestion, Debbie!

My poor 80+ year old mother has literally shut herself off because of diet limitations. This is such a good idea.

Wonderful idea. I have food allergies, but like the VAST majority of people with food allergies, they aren't life threatening. Mostly you just get a headache, maybe an upset stomach, itchy throat. But I have also been know to get a headache from indulging in a glass or two too much wine at a party and an upset stomach from a too big helping of chile. I'm sure I am not alone. I love guacamole, but am allergic to avocados. When I am at a party, I often take a big scoop, and enjoy, itchy mouth and all!

That salad looks delicious. I hope someone I know with dietary restrictions brings it to the next party I attend!

That salad looks so yummy Debs.
My cousins DH has celiac disease. He goes to parties and gatherings and doesn't eat. So silly. My brother brings smoked mullet or wild meat if he can, he is a hunter and fisherman, he even brought something for him even to the open house after The Mommies funeral. How silly is that to make people feel uncomfortable, coming and only drinking water when they could bring a dish to share! Some people just think everyone needs to cater to them.
I would love the recipe of your salad Debs and I will give you mine for my layered salad which is enough for 30 or more or you can make it for a few. Everyone wanted my recipe when I took it to Emmy's baby shower.
