Okay, it's time to talk turkey!
As usual, most of our local grocery stores are offering deep discounts on our holiday birds, usually based on a minimum purchase amount. These "loss leaders" are to get you into the store to do all your holiday buying.
The savvy shopper, with a plan and a little extra time, can save big bucks!
But why stop at just one? With the great deal happening this month, you can enjoy your favorite turkey recipes all year long, at holiday prices!
Here are the prices I found today...

Most of these purchases will exclude price of the turkey, money orders, lottery tickets, pharmacy purchases, alcohol, and tobacco. All prices are subject to change, make sure you contact the store and check the price the day you plan to shop.
American Farm Bureau Federation’s 24th annual informal price survey of classic items found on the Thanksgiving Day dinner table indicates the average cost of this year’s feast for 10 is $42.91 (a $1.70 price decrease from last year’s average of $44.61.)
Based on this, I'd make a trip to Albertsons or Winco, spending around $25 on each trip, and getting two turkeys (about 20lbs each) for around $6.60 each, one for the feast, and another for the freezer.
If you're spending more, can handle the amount of time required, and have the freezer space, you could get 1 turkey for every $25 you're budgeting. Spend $100.00 and you've got Thanksgiving dinner, and three turkeys socked away.
I'll probably make several Winco runs, as they are likely to have the best prices on the rest of my ingredients as well, then roast/smoke the extra turkeys to slice for sandwiches, soup, or my famous turkey risotto!
If you plan to spend $100.00 or more and don't have the freezer space, Thriftway is probably your best bet.
Oh, and here's the recipe I'll be trying out this year..."Whole Roasted Turkey with Citrus Rosemary Salt." 'Course, I'll be cooking the bird in my La Caja China!

PS – Here’s a tip if you’re going for multiple turkeys: Take a calculator with you to the store, along with your grocery list, and keep track of each item you put in the cart. Check off each item as you go, and when you hit the minimum amount, go get your turkey and check-out. If it’s a busy store, load up the groceries, and go right back in for the next batch!

Thank you Perry. This is very useful information!
If I'm socking away 3 turkeys- that's an awefully big sock!!
When I can, I get extra turkeys when they are 22, 23 cents per pound (I'm buying groceries anyhow) if I'm not going to use a turkey I still buy them, you get a 20# turkey for $5.00 or less and then I donate it/them to our local food bank organization - they always need extras. For instance a store like Fred Meyer who sells other things besides groceries - your $25.00 worth to qualify for the turkey discount price counts whether it's groceries or not. And it feels good being able to help also.
Betty, that's a WONDERFUL idea! Thank you for sharing that, I'm passing the idea along to my pastor right now!
Thanks again,
-Perry
