We are, unfortunately, the Biggest Loser, generation. Far too many people are eligible, or are approaching eligibility, for the reality show. The way stop this trend is easier than we all may think. One way to stop the growth of our ever-expanding waist sizes is by exploring topic of kids and exercise. Step One: We have to stop using the word exercise with our children.
Exercise is defined as, “the activity of exerting your muscles in various ways to keep fit.” For many people however, it could be defined as follows; “an act of torture, something that I do half-heartedly sporadically throughout the year.” Trying to get over these feelings toward exercise is a different topic entirely, but because the word exercise does cause such strong reactions it is important not to use the term with our children.
Except for those unfortunate children afflicted with glandular issues, staying in shape is a relatively easy thing for kids to do. There are two components to keeping your children in good shape, diet and exercise…I mean activity or movement or play. When discussing this with children I prefer the latter description, play.
Every child loves to play and playing, whether it be basketball in the driveway, tag or just wrestling around in the living room is there exercise. By keeping your kids active throughout the day by playing various games inside, and more importantly for them (and you), outside you will lay the groundwork for healthy and happy children. Laying the groundwork does not mean the final goal will be achieved, however. You have to be involved in this play time too. By spending the quality time with your children playing tag (and not just telling them to get outside while you plant yourself on the couch) you will create some great memories for your children (and you, too) while you all are exercising. Just make sure that you don’t tell them it was exercise.
It seems simple, but that’s because it is. Your kids love you, although they certainly don’t show it all of the time. The most effective way to impact their lives is to take an active role. The excitement and fun that you have while playing will certainly spread to your kids and it will create an attachment to the activity and strengthen your relationship as well.
This is only one component of keeping your kids healthy and off of the next season of Biggest Loser, but it is a good start. Not only will your kids stay active and in better shape, but you will create great and lasting memories that you will all share for years to come. We’ll take on diets (the noun, not the verb) another time.
