Indoor things for a dad to do in Miami.

It’s hot. Yes, this is the understatement of the week but it had to be said.  While other places in the country are enjoying cool fall weather, we are seeing near record breaking heat.  Right now, according to weather.com, it is 88°F at 10 am and it feels like it is 100°F. So, why this weather report? Because, unless you were born and raised in Saharan Africa, there is no way that you could survive outdoor play in this heat.
With the exception of water sports, playing outside in the South Florida summer is near to impossible. The high humidity and extreme temperatures are the main ingredients for sun stroke. Even well hydrated, my children have a midday outdoor shelf live of about fifteen minutes. So, like the typical Miamian, we move the outdoor games indoor where we have an ample supply of air conditioning.
For my sons second birthday, we kept cool by going to a new place called Bounce Party Planet on SW 137 Ave. My son saw it from afar while driving to the Costco that is in the same shopping complex. At the time, they were still under construction and were fighting their way through Miami’s permitting requirements. Eventually, I was able to go in and take a look. What I saw was amazing in a warped kind of way. Bounce Party Planet is nothing more than a strip mall rental space filled wall-to-wall with inflated bounce houses. Seeing it, my son thought that he had died and went to heaven.
The Miami Fatherhood Examiner article on Monday talked about our inability to do some of our traditional fathering duties because of the specifics of Miami life. Thanks to the weather, hours of batting practice, the mainstay of any good father, is out of the question. Necessity is the mother of invention or, for us in the very far south, the mother of air conditioning. Therefore, indoor batting cages were created. Places like Hardball Training Center, who specifically tout their ability to separate the athlete from the environment, are built to save us from the paradise hell of the outdoors.
