Vis Arts Center of Rockville. MD is hosting the art show "Wearable Art/Unwearable Fashion."  The exhibit is an interesting twist that includes traditional textiles, jewelry and other "wearables" with fashion made out of non-traditional items such as Lilo Schaer's "Weekly Washing", a collection of intimate apparel made from cake doilies.

Standout items include Jan Mandel's 18karat gold Stricture Series, Evelyn Brooke's EcoChic collection, Moschik, that is completely made with recycled silver & natural seeds, and Martin Figueroa's custom painted sneaker line called Rom (pronounced roam).

The exhibit, running through June 19, 2010 opened with a reception that included models showcasing textile designs (mainly scarves and wraps), a mime and dance performance called "Glitter Gut" by Tyler Matthew Oyer and Layla Marcelle Mrozowski, and Martin Figueroa painting a pair of sneakers.  Guests enjoyed light refreshments and perused the large exhibition space.

All of the pieces in the exhibit were reviewed and the winners were announced: 1st place to Natalie David of Virginia with her piece named "Mother", 2nd place to Dena Gershon of Ohio with her piece "Bering Strait Vest," and 3rd place to Lilo Schaer of Switzerland with the before mentioned "Weekly Washing."

Vis Arts Center is conveniently located in the Rockville Town Square.  Stop by and enjoy the unique exhibit through June.  Make sure to visit the gift shop, Vis Arts Too which includes works by resident artists, as well as prominent local and national artists.
