Twenties clothing exhibit at Lacis in Berkeley is a smash hit

There was no foolin’ around last Thursday, April 1 as attendees gathered at Lacis Museum of Lace and Textiles in Berkeley to view the latest exhibit, Night and Day: The World of the Twenties. Curated by shop manager Erin Algeo, the unique exhibit highlights men’s, women’s and children’s clothing of the 1920s.

The museum space is small, but well organized with displays on the walls and tableaux showing images of 1920s life. Among the vintage riches are velvet and beaded dresses, cloche hats, linen rompers, embroidered shawls, and a gent’s tuxedo. A display case holds an array of must-have accessories of the day, such as handkerchiefs and gloves. The unusual wax mannequins have an almost eerie realistic feel with polite smiles and shinny cheeks. Loaned to the museum by doll maker and Lacis board member Ellen Thomsen, the mannequins date from the late 1870s to the 1930s.

Local author Zoe Klippert and her friend Diana Lindquist drove from Moraga to see the exhibit. Zoe has become a regular at Lacis researching varieties of lace for her current book. Diana recognized many of the clothing and accessory motifs from old photos of her aunt, who as a young woman in 1920s San Francisco enjoyed the fashions of her era.

Art Deco Society members, Alice Jurow and Theresa LaQuey took a break from planning the upcoming Preservation Ball to view the exhibit. Sporting 20s clothing themselves, the Art Deco aficionados said they were most impressed.

Night & Day: The World of the Twenties, April 1 to September 1, 2010. Open Monday through Saturday Noon-6:00 pm. Lacis Museum of Lace and Textiles, 2982 Adeline Street, Berkeley, 510-843-7290
