It was Amy Sarabi Night on Thursday February 18th when the City of Oakland hosted a soiree in her honor. Local designer Skylier Blanchard worked with Samee Roberts, Manager of Oakland’s Cultural Arts and Oakland Councilmember Nancy Nadel to organize a celebration for Amy and a viewing of Project Runway Episode 6. Close to 50 locals including designers and fashionistas showed up to meet and support Amy at the fashionable Den at the Fox Theater. “We all wanted to honor her,” says Ms. Blanchard, who with the City of Oakland put the event together in just two weeks.
Oakland is quickly becoming a fashion-centered city with an influx of designers and fashion shows such as the recent Kiss the Curves: First Ever Plus-Size Fashion Gala in the Bay Area. Amy representing Oakland on Project Runway is helping to put the spotlight on our diverse city. “It’s time to celebrate Oakland fashion,” says Oakland City Councilmember Nancy Nadel, District Three. “The acclaim Amy and her fellow Oakland designers are generating is putting our city on the map as a regional center for cutting-edge fashion and design.”
To continue the celebration the City is planning future fashion events, including exhibits of local designers' work at various venues around Uptown Oakland. Starting with Amy this spring/summer, the exhibits will be available for casual viewing during the day allowing attendees a chance to see the designs up close. “It’s important to see the fashions in the daylight,” says Ms. Blanchard.
