The great thing about Fort Lauderdale is that you never know who’s hiding right around the corner. In this case, Meaghan Mahoney, creator of The Purse Blog, is a virtual celebrity that operates right in our backyard. The Purse Blog is revered by many as the foremost authority on authenticating bags, as well as, naming the next hot handbag trends and styles.
The Purse Blog was originally started by Meaghan and her now husband Vlad while they were in college at Ohio State. What began as a fun hobby in 2005 grew organically into mega-blog it is today.
Luckily for this Fashion Examiner, Meaghan is a great friend from high school, so in between trips to Manhattan to visit with designer buddies like Rebecca Minkoff and Bottega Venetta and being featured as the Blogger of the Moment by Teen Vogue; I got to pick her brain about spring trends in handbags over a latte at our neighborhood Starbucks.
When asked what to look for this fall, she replied immediately “Tie Dye.” In respect of her expertise, I tried to mask the questioning look on my face, but once I saw that she was talking about refined dying techniques versus Grateful-Dead tie dye, it made a lot more sense. Designers like Donna Karan, Be&D, and even Coach have their own versions of the tie dye trend.
Another thing to look out for, according to Meaghan, is perforated leather—“perf” for short on The Purse Forum. Picture a mesh football jersey, but in super-luxe leather and all kinds of colors all over the spectrum from neutrals to fuchsia. Many designers including Bottega Venetta, Jimmy Choo, and Burberry, have rolled out their own adaptations.
