Tony Wang’s first trunk show will take place on Saturday, November 21, 2009 from 1:00pm-4:00pm at Mathew Izzo (151 North 3rd Street).
Tony Wang, a local fashion designer and a student at The University of Pennsylvania will showcase his two Spring/Summer 2010 Collection items, 3st and Exordium.
The 3st Collection focuses on urban wear for men and women, and a 15% discount off all 3st items will be offered at the trunk show. Exordium is an exclusive line of hand-painted super skinny ties and each tie is an original design.
If the name Tony Wang sounds familiar it may be because he was recently profiled on Seventeen.com.
Describe your collections in three words?
Energetic. Eclectic. Edgy.
How many pieces are in your collections? Are there more items for men or women?
There are currently ten pieces in my collections.
If you believe skinny ties are for women too and I definitely think a woman can pull off a tie look then the items are pretty balanced. Otherwise, it is a focus on men since ties are traditionally men's pieces.
Currently, what inspires you and your designs?
My current collections are inspired by contrast and polarization. The pieces have two differing elements juxtaposed together.
For the ties, notice the smooth gradient and ombre color scheme that is interrupted by the blocked, linear presence of geometric shapes.
The urban wear tends to have two contrasting colors such as black and white, purple and yellow, or teal and cyan.
My Fall/Winter Collection will be much darker and inspired by the fluid nature of life and death. The motifs are sea waves, tree roots, and black crowns. The collection will focus on men's and women’s outerwear, such as capes and jackets
How do you want to change or influence the style in Philadelphia?
I want to show the world that Philadelphia has its own sphere of influence in the world of fashion and design.
When it comes to American designers, people tend to think that designers are centered and based in New York. While I cannot disagree that New York will probably always remain the mecca of style that does not mean that other cities cannot have a sense of fashion that gives New York a run for its money…
I want to be a part of that great surge of design from this city, and I hope my unique vision of fashion can contribute something to that end.
What does style mean to you?
I think style means something different to everyone.
As a person, style is a great way to express myself and look great. It's a way to attract attention and stand out.
However, as a designer, I see style as an interesting component within fashion. I like to approach fashion as an art. The difference between the two is that art can be ugly or grotesque on purpose, while still having artistic value. But, fashion is not something you can really do that with. Why? Because fashion, no matter how artistic it is, must also have style in it.
It's an interesting challenge to see how far I can push the line of style while being able to pursue my vision of fashion as art. What is too much? How can I make new styles? Can I turn something people used to consider unstylish into the next big thing? These are all interesting questions that I ask when I'm designing.
Who is your style icon?
I am a very whimsical and fast-paced person. I do not like to get fixated on a person because that prevents me from being able to constantly explore new styles and ideas. That being said, I love the androgynous look that Agyness Deyn brings to the fashion world. I love the unabashed style Lady Gaga presents to her audience, and I am fascinated by the Japanese style of dress in rock bands called visual kei.
This trunk show is an amazing opportunity for locals to check out Tony Wang's two collections.
Tony Wang will be selling his items pre-season and Matthew Izzo will continue to carry his line for the month of December.
Tony Wang has also partnered with BCBGMAXAZRIA to bring all attendees of the trunk show special promotional and exclusive BCBG items from their newest line BCBGeneration. All attendees will leave with a draw bag, a tote bag or a t-shirt from their BCBGeneration line, and if you buy an item from Tony Wang you will receive all three gifts.
