Let’s be real – there are unfortunately at least two months left in this winter season for freezing temps, blistering wind, and a possible nor’easter. One of the toughest things about Boston winters is that there is no way of getting around the need to bundle up and stay warm with a heavy coat, hat, gloves, and boots. But how do you stay stylish while you’re trying to avoid frostbite? Here are three solutions for keeping your style while staying warm:
- Pick one statement accessory. You’re going to need to wear gloves, a scarf, and maybe a hat, depending on your coat and how cold it is. There is a good chance that each of those accessories will be purchased separately or given to you as individual gifts. However, they will all be worn together, so it’s important to think of them as one when you piece them together. Choose one of the accessories to accentuate. Did you find a cute hat that keeps you warm and doesn’t mess up your hair? Did you receive an eye-catching hand woven scarf? Wear that statement accessory confidently and pair it with neutrals, like a black hat or gray gloves.
- Dress up. Dresses and skirts don’t need to be saved just for the summer months. They are important pieces to a stylish outfit, regardless of the season. However, walking in the winter through the wind tunnels of downtown Boston makes for a chilly commute in a dress. Tights don’t always do the trick in these situations, but the good news is the leggings trend is still going strong in 2010. Leggings come in neutral colors, like brown and black, and bold patterns, like tie-dye and prints if you’re really looking to make a statement.
- Don’t wear black. This is a tough one since most warm winter coats are the old standby color of black. But doesn’t it get boring when all you see on the platform of the T is black? It’s so refreshing when someone wears a winter coat that stands out from the crowd in a sophisticated way. Look for coats in a pretty cranberry, deep plum, or emerald green color.

I LOVE the thought of wearing skirts in winter. I frequently wear some bolder patterns from summer with darker tights for the cold! Gives winter that burst of color it lacks.
