Costume Craze: Comic-Con brings characters to life

Terrific Trio: Na'vi ladies looking cool in "Avatar" blue

Hollywood and the world of entertainment descended upon San Diego at the 2010 International Comic Convention where geeks and entertainment buffs alike united to share their love for comics, film, TV, art and pop-culture with some pizzazz…dressed in costume.

My senses were delighted and my eyes were amazed to see all the fashion-fare that Comic-Con had to offer by the boundless imagination of attendees. My eyes were set to pick out the fashion faves of those that wowed the crowd with their unique and amazing handmade costumes.

The handmade costumes ranged from sci-fi faves like Star Wars to superheroes from Marvel comics, and even pop-culture obsessions from flicks and TV. My top three picks for "best dressed" that stood out in the crowd because of their bold, unique and creative attire…

Attractive in Avatar: BFF’s Caitlyn H., Rachel F. and Sidney P. from Bakersfield, CA demonstrated their passion for Pandora dressed as Na’vi ladies from the sci-fi film “Avatar.” What’s more amazing is that these gals not only stunned the crowd with their cool blue style but also equally impressed attendees who found out that they made the costumes themselves. When asked why they dressed in “Avatar” attire, the ladies replied, they “really like the movie” [“Avatar”]. So how did they make these costumes? “We ordered the uni-tards online and then we painted everything, made our own jewelry and then did all of our hair and everything.” These ladies looked attractive in “Avatar” — and really stood out in the Exhibit halls, wowing the crowd.

Monkey Madness: SDCC fans dressed as sock monkeys

Ape-Listers: Comic-Con attendees went bananas over this dynamic duo dressed as sock monkeys. Chelsea B. and Drew S. from La Mesa, CA got the idea from watching a TV commercial so there was no monkeying around because Chelsea got to designing — “we were watching the Super Bowl and saw a commercial with a monkey and a KIA and I said, ‘that’d be so cool if we could walk around in a monkey suit’ and it just kind of sprang from there and we bought a thousand rolls of yarn. I think we went through like 20 rolls of yarn and made it.” Chelsea “made the costumes and after a little bit of time, we ended up teaching him [Drew] how to do it so he could help with the process.” So why come to Comic-Con as sock monkeys? Chelsea says she comes to convention for the costumes, “because being able to make a costume that other people want to take a picture of — it for me, that’s like the most amazing feeling in the world.” Fans went apes for this pair and surely appreciated the retro toy look that these sock monkeys brought to the floor because they were a barrel of fun!

Perfect Puppets: Fandango bag puppets caught the attention of attendees at entrance

Fandango Fierce: The terrific trio of Fandango bag puppets knew how to greet attendees at the entrance of the San Diego Convention Center posing for pics and showing off their passion for movies. The trio was made up of the Lucha Libre/Superhero puppet clad in a red cape and mask, the lady bag puppet wearing a dress accessorized with hoop earrings and a pink scarf and the beach boy puppet wearing a Hawaiian shirt and sporting starfish hair. The trio came equipped with Fandango buttons, including the catchy “Viva Fandango” button which featured the Masked Wrestler character. The Fandango characters knew they had it “in the bag” because the crowd went wild and even screamed “Fandango” instead of the traditional “cheese” for photo-ops.
