The area around the Columbia Heights Metro station has seen a lot of change over the past few years. Developers pushed aside small Latino eateries and the remains of a historic post office to bring in new condominium buildings and District’s first Target store. Those who argue that such changes diffused the community will rejoice at a recent announcement: Come June, the plaza bordered by 14th and Kenyon streets and Park Road, NW, will host a weekly Columbia Heights Community Marketplace.
No, this won't be a weekday market. A survey showed community members lean toward Saturdays. The people have spoken, and the market will run each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., from June 5 to October 30.
Propelled by community members and informed by the survey that had more than 250 respondents, the event will center on a farmers market. Customers can not only buy produce, however. Organizers hope to bring inlive music, cooking demonstrations by local chefs, and dance performances from students at the nearby Dance Institute of Washington.
