Cortland Apples at the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket
Apples are often overlooked until mid-winter, when suddenly they are the only fruit available at the farmers' market. Most people, if pressed, can name a handful of apple varieties: red delicious, golden delicious, granny smith, maybe fuji or macintosh. There are, however, thousands of varieties of apples, each with their own unique blend of sweet and tart, not to mention the variety in textures.
At the Union Square Greenmarket you can find the pale and lumpy Calville blanc, which is advertised as having more Vitamin C than an orange. They are quite sweet and very crisp. The apples in the photo are from the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket, and are of the Cortland variety. Cortland apples were developed at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, NY, way back in 1898.
So the next time you see apples, take the time to remember the name of the variety you pick up. You may just find a new favorite.
