Sugarcane and blasphemy

While ambling through the Manhattan Beach Farmers’ Market yesterday, sun sparking on the ocean just a glance away, I happened upon a refreshing health drink in the form of Raw Cane Super Juice. This elixir is derived from organically grown cane that is cultivated by local California owned farms. Sugarcane is a type of grass that is grown specifically for its sweetness and health benefits. It has been popular in Asia and Latin countries for generations. It is a truly amazing product, and, as I learned, it is sustainable and completely useable; even the pulp is used in many fuel applications.

Since Sugarcane is a grass, it grows rapidly and contains many minerals that are easily extracted in the juicing process. This gift of the earth is rich in antioxidants and is heralded for its effective detoxification of the body, and low glycemic index. This combination makes it an ideal sweetening option for those with diabetes and other sugar sensitivities. Personally, I will say it was delicious and energizing without the “sugar rush”. I had my kids try it, they liked it, and any health drink I can get them to drink is a good one.

Now for the blasphemy part of this review, I hope you can forgive me. Maybe its just me, or the summer breeze coming off the ocean but, I can’t help but wonder how this would work in a Caipirinha or Mojito. It is so subtle in its sweetness that it seems the perfect compliment to natural cane derived liquor like Rum or Jaguar Vodka. I can really almost taste the tang of mint awaken with the sweetness of the cane sugar juice. I just couldn’t help myself, thinking of the originating cultures it was an intuitive leap. Although I won’t encourage its use in cocktails I will leave that to your discretion.
