What is more daring than the old style Black Cats and bottle rockets? The answer would have to be Backdraft Hot Sauce, Bite Me Chipotle and Roasted Garlic Hot Sauce and of course American Patriot Hot Sauce. These may not immediately spring to your mind but at Light My Fire located at the Farmers’ Market LA they may both tempt and your scorch palette. This shop is awash with hundreds of chili sauces from the timid to the down right insane. The walls are literally covered top to bottom with hundreds of sauces. You can easily pick up a few and treat your friends to a fiery feast.
You can get Tabasco, Peri-peri, chili mixes and the list goes on. Who would have guessed there was so much chili sauce out there? The shop brings the world of chili to you, literally. The sauces hail from Mexico, Peru, Trinidad, Belize, and even China. Imagine the fun it would be to try them all. You don’t have to be a chili head to have a great time just looking at the labels and reading the descriptions. Some bottles are ornately decorated; dressed as cowboys or even bedecked with tattoo art. It would be easy to spend an hour just exploring the labels. A word of caution, some of the labels are a bit “racy” so do pay attention if shopping with children. A suggestion to the management: put the adult-themed sauces on the top shelf.
The proprietors of Light My Fire have very cleverly posted a heat scale for each of the sauces they offer. Most are in the 6-8 range, but there is a whole rack dedicated to the crazy stuff. A truly excellent sauce should have a range of flavors instead of pure heat and pain but of course, it depends on how you use it. Hot sauce can be used for so much more than wings and pizza. Consider, for example, Cheech’s Chili-Mango Sauce, a sweet and spicy concoction that would make an intriguing addition to a chocolate sundae. Chili sauce isn’t all you will find here, there are snacks too spicy popcorn, chips, beef jerky and of course Bloody Mary mix, but, sorry, no chili soda--I guess it hasn’t been invented yet. If you are in the mood for some hot stuff, you can find it there. So get out there and get burning.
