Here are my Week 12 picks in the third installment of the national Examiner.com fantasy football collaboration effort. Please check out the national fantasy football Examiner page and the local fantasy sports pages at the bottom of the page. There's plenty of great information to help you have a more dominate fantasy football team.

Check out this week's picks from the other Examiners and the national roundtable of picks for Week 12:

Dave Del Grande's Picks (National)

Kyle Vamvakas's Picks (Denver)

Deni Martin's Picks (Detroit)

Mark Fuery's Picks (Boston)

Kylan McQuaig's Picks (Philadelphia)

Hometown starter: Vernon Davis, TE, 49ers

As long as the San Francisco passing game opens up Sunday (which it should considering Mike Singletary has seen the 49ers put up points when they’re forced to pass), Vernon Davis should have a good game against the Jaguars, who have a mediocre defense. Expect an above average game from a tight end at the very least and a possible repeat from last week as his ceiling.

Hometown bench warmer: Oakland Defense/Special Teams

The Raiders are such a risky team. Yes, their defense played very well against the Bengals and Eagles this year, but they also lost to the scores of 23-3, 29-6, 44-7, and 38-0. They’re wildly inconsistent and it’s important people don’t look at last week’s game in a vacuum. They’re boom or bust, and you should expect a bust this Thanksgiving.

Week 12 Big Expectations: David Garrard, QB, Jaguars

The 49ers pass defense isn’t anyway near spectacular, and if Jacksonville wants to beat San Francisco this Sunday, they’ll have to pass the ball at least a little bit. Granted, Maurice-Jones Drew is a stud on the ground, but if the San Francisco run defense holds steady, it’ll force Garrard to throw which in turns should get you a decent amount of fantasy points.

Week 12 Player to Avoid: Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Steelers

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has indicated that Roethlisberger will probably start this week, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be elite this weekend. He completes a large number of his passes, but Pittsburgh plays a good Baltimore team on the road this week, and it’s by no means a guarantee Big Ben will light up the Ravens. There are safer, albeit not as fun, choices out there.

Question of the week: Which NFL player could be a surprise fantasy-playoffs MVP this season?

49ers tight end Vernon Davis has a good chance of being a huge difference maker for teams during the fantasy playoffs this year. San Francisco is out of the running for the real playoffs, which means they'll play their best players week in and week out. The 49ers play the Lions and Rams during the last two weeks of the year; two teams with horrendous defenses and games that Davis could put up monster numbers. The tight end spot is often overlooked in fantasy play, but having someone like Vernon Davis (who's put up 601 yards and 8 touchdowns in just 10 game) could give you that extra advantage that puts you over the top during the playoffs and the championship game, a two-game series that has favorable matchups for him.
