Principal photography on “Priest” is complete, according to a tweet posted by director Scott Stewart. Stewart says:
"Principal photography on Priest is complete! Best crew I've ever worked with. A bittersweet day."
“Priest,” is sort of a post-apocalyptic version of John Ford's “The Searchers,” or more recently, “Taken,” with Paul Bettany playing a priest-turned-vampire hunter on a quest to take his niece back from the vampires who have kidnapped her, in a future where the world is overrun by vampires. Cam Gigandet (“Twilight”), Christopher Plummer, Brad Dourif, Maggie Q and Karl Urban (“Star Trek”) are also featured. The screenplay is by Cory Goodman from the TokyoPop comic.
Shooting took place in and around Los Angeles, and desert locales, including the salt flats around Trona where temperatures soared to over one hundred and twenty degrees.
Stewart who has a background in visual effects, has previously worked in that capacity or as a producer on “Mars Attacks!,” “The Lost World: Jurassic Park,” “Sin City,” “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” “Superman Returns” and “Iron Man” among others. He will make his directorial debut with the apocalyptic thriller "Legion," produced by Bold Films, which is scheduled to open in January. Stewart also has a deal to produce "Psy-Ops," an action thriller which he co-wrote with Gus Krieger, for Bold, which independently finances and produces its projects.
"Legion," dealing with angels and the possible end of the world, may benefit from recent interest in the subject, as evidenced by the big opening weekend of "2012." “Priest” is expected to be released in the summer of 2010, barely six months after the release of “Legion.”
Potentially, this could be a big one-two punch debut for Scott Stewart, who obviously will poised to be a major player if both films click.
