Is 'Dr. Don Blake' going to be in 'Thor...?'

In a routine story on actress Kat Dennings joining the cast of “Thor,” Variety managed to stir up a bit of a hornets’ nest. Little is known about the specifics of the plot, but Variety said:

"Thor," scripted by Mark Protosevich, Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller, centers on a partly disabled med student who discovers his Norse god alter ego, the hammer-swinging Thor. Paramount will release the film on May 20, 2011.

Ain’t It Cool News read that and, felt it contradicted some of what they’d learned, and:

[S]o we contacted a 100% tested and solid source, someone intimately familiar with the movie Kenneth Branagh is making, and he or she tells AICN Donald Blake is definitely NOT in the movie.

AICN doesn’t name their “solid source,” but assuming the information is good, it does beg the question where Variety got their synopsis. For the uninitiated, the disabled med student Variety refers to would be Don Blake, sort of the Clark Kent in the series. To teach Thor humility, Odin, Thor’s father, put Thor’s consciousness in Blake’s body, giving him Blake’s memories while forgetting his own. Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, is disguised as a cane, and Blake eventually finds that by using Mjolnir he can into Thor and back again at will. Without Blake being used in the movie, presumably an origin story, it’s hard to imagine how Thor will interact with mortals, which eventually leads to his joining The Avengers.

Also, Natalie Portman is reported to be cast as Jane Foster, a nurse who worked with Don Blake in the comics, and was involved in a romantic triangle with Blake and Thor.

This one will have to get filed under “time will tell.” The movie goes into production in January.
