We’ve already reported on some of the movies in development based on board games, particularly ones owned by Hasbro. Some have seemed more likely than others. “Battleship” sounded like one that could work. Director Peter Berg and Universal have let a few tidbits about their “Battleship” movie out.
Might as well just get this over with.
It’s going to have aliens in it.
This has been reported at this point by Collider, CHUD and Latino Review. Berg’s giving interviews. They’re admitting to this. It seems beyond doubt that “Battleship” has aliens.
Now, the aliens are called the Regents, they’re going to be part actor and part CGI but not as much CGI as the tentacle-faced guys in “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.” They don’t have superior technology. They’re not here to take over the world. They’re up to something but so far that much of the script is remaining classified.
There haven’t been a lot of aliens-in-the-water movies. This may be because no one likes them. James Cameron spent $70 million to make “The Abyss” back in 1989 and it only made back $90 million. Not that that’s an insignificant gross, but the profit margin is sort of non-existent.
Hasbro properties have been flying off the shelves lately and we’re not talking at Toys ‘R’ Us. Ever since the success of “Transformers” and “GI Joe,” it’s started to look like the new Marvel. The difference is, Marvel properties come with plotlines. Whether moviegoers will line up for a movie based on a game that doesn’t seem to have much to do with the game would seem like a question.
