Big Storm Expected to Precede Lake Tahoe Ski Resort Openings

Snow is predicted to hit the region starting Friday and possibly through the weekend, dumping anywhere from six inches at lake level to  two feet in the upper elevations. That has Tahoe ski resorts scrambling  to get for larger than average opening day crowds.

“The first really big storm of the ski season is always a welcome sight,” said Tourism Director Andy Chapman of the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association. “It absolutely gets people excited, and when visitors are excited they start booking.”

Boreal Mountain  opened October 9, the earliest opening in the resort’s history, making it also the first ski resort to open in California. Mt. Rose  opened October 30 and moved to a seven-day week operation today, November 19.

Northstar-at-Tahoe, home to Lake Tahoe’s first five-star caliber resort, The Ritz-Carlton Highlands (opening December 9), will  begin ferrying skiers and snowboarders up the mountain Saturday, November 21 Resorts insiders say it will be the best opening day conditions since the 1994-95 season.

Meanwhile, Squaw Valley USA, celebrating its 60th anniversary, also officially opens this Saturday.  Plenty of festivities in the works. For example, professional skier JT Homes plans to base-jumpi from the resort’s famous cable car at 2 p.m. And Olympian Jonny Moseley will toast the resort at the KT Sundeck, 2-3:45 p.m. Balloons will be released and an anniversary cake served.
