Parents picket, activist incarcerated, $1k bail for chalk message

Parents' rights activist John Murtari was arrested again today for writing on the Wayne County Hall of Justice Courthouse in Lyons, NY.  Murtari was incarcerated and given $1,000 bail for writing "Mr. Oaks help family rights" one time on the side of the building with washable children's sidewalk chalk. (See photo to left.)

Murtari was joined by two other parents today, Scott Rhodes and Mark Hough of Equal Parents for Children in Rochester.  (See photos and video below.)  They spoke to Assemblyman Oak's secretary Myra Brown about their personal situations, family faw reform, and protecting the civil right of mothers, fathers, and children to be secure as family.  Hough explains his interest.

I just recently went through a separation and divorce.  My son lives with me 3 days a week.  This was what my attorney had worked out with my wife's attorney for the best interest of our son.

If this had not been worked out, my son and I would have been at the mercy of family court.  In most cases that I know of, family court was devastating to the children, as well as the noncustodial parent.  The children in most cases were stripped of their right to both parents.

Even as my son spends quality time with both parents, his mother is trying to alienate him emotionally from me. I've learned this is called parental alienation. I fully support the Declaration of Family Rights so children's rights can be established.

After leaving Oak's office, Hough, Rhodes and Murtari held a peaceful protest in front of the Wayne County Courthouse.  They held signs with photos of their children and the words "Help family rights" while walking back and forth along the sidewalk.  Not wanting to put Hough and Rhodes at risk of arrest, Murtari returned alone to write on the building.

These activities are part of Murtari's ongoing quest to get Assemblyman Robert Oaks to author a Parents Rights Act.  Murtari has submitted a draft of proposed legislation to Oaks.  He thinks it would be political suicide, according to Murtari.

Murtari says he was informed by his council over the weekend that the DA planned to request a psychiatric examination of him.  She said he does not believe Murtari is competent to stand trial.  Two psychiatrists examined Murtari during one protest that had him surviving via feeding tube for 123 days while incarcerated for child support arrears he says he does not owe.  Both psychiatrists found Murtari to be of sound mind.

Wondering if local officials are trying to embarrass him he asks, "The local Court sees many cases of robberies, domestic violence, drug use, and other criminal behavior.  But when a peaceful person is
willing to risk jail to show the importance of a Civil Right issue -- they need to have their head examined?"  Murtari, founder of akidsright.org and the National Parents Leadership Council is scheduled to appear at the Wayne County Courthouse in Lyons on Nov. 25.

I don't understand what the protester for "family rights" is advocating. It seems Orwellian to me. People will say family or kids' rights but they just don't want to take responsibility for splitting up. They married the person and go into a divorce. Family court splits things as evenly as possible. Where's the controversy?

Writing with sidewalk chalk on public sidewalks is something children do almost every day. I am happy to see others with Mr. Murtari standing up for their parental rights as well. When it comes to interfering with our obligations to parent our own - no amount of money should cause a loving parent to back down. I know because the State of Florida is FORCING me to pay 'child support' to a convicted child molester.

Joe you have a long way to go before you actually know anything about the reality of divorce and kids. Mr Murtari got split from his kid alright, just as millions and I repeat millions of fathers have. The good thing is we need lots of people like you to continue to believe and subsidize with ten times the tax dollars in costs to keep the divorce and custody myth in a happy place. You would actually make a good lawyer they believe the same as you do and make quite a business out of it. In fact 60% of their business is custody and child support, imagine that !

I have had to delete some comments for being of a libelous and personal nature about myself or others. I encourage debate, but not degrading or lying about others. Comments of this nature will be deleted.

Claudine (fake screen names don't fool anyone) before you spout off about John Murtari, take a moment to visit his website. There you will find photos of John and his son Dom. John's activism started over his love and devotin to Dom. And Dom is in full support of John's activism.

John Murtari is a man of honor. He's a retired Air Force Academy training pilot, and was in seminary school to become a priest at one time. He left when he realized that he wanted to be a dad.

The controversery is when one parent decides that they don't want the marriage or family any longer without the thought of the other or the children, and they moved out and leave children with other parent and then they come back to take the children away from that parent that was the sole provider when it suits their needs. Then the parent brain washes the child/ren to keep control over them telling lies about the parent who was there when that parent stepped out. Court doesnt not always split things evenly and usually no matter what they favor the mother. The father contuinues to support them but has no contact because the mother changes her phone number and does everything she can do to alienate the non custidial parent. Where is the justice in that??

This guy's beef is over his ex wife moving away. He sees his son on a regular basis. I bet his son wishes he would quit doing things to get himself locked up. It must be very stressful for his son. I guess dad cares more about what he thinks is right rather than whats best for his son
