The CPSC has re-announced its recall of the Simplicity "Close-Sleeper/Bedside Sleeper," due to two additional infant deaths in the last year. The original CPSC recall was released in August of 2008, after two other infant deaths.
The CPSC is solely responsible for these recalls. The Simplicity company was sold at public auction in April 2008 to SFCA Inc. The CPSC notes in its latest press release that SFCA Inc. seems to have ceased to exist, as it is not returning phone calls, nor answering emails regarding the recalls. They were also uncooperative in the original recall.
Two infants died in 2007 and 2008 when they became entrapped in the metal bars of the bassinet. Prompting the re-issuing of the recall were a death in which the infant suffocated in a "pocket" that formed in the adjustable fabric siding, and another in which the infant became trapped in the bar opening. Additionally, the CPSC is reporting that two infants sustained injuries when their heads were caught in the bar opening.
Recalled bassinets should be immediately returned to the point of purchase. The following is a list of local retailers who sold the bassinets:
- Amazon.com
- Bed, Bath & Beyond
- Big Lots
- J.C. Penney
- KMart
- Kohl's
- Target
- Toys R' Us
- WalMart
Bassinets produced after May 2008 were changed in style to prevent such accidents from occurring. To determine if your bassinet is part of the recall, look for the model manufacture date code of 2108, as well as any of the following model numbers:

Wow. This is sad. I hope no other babies die because of this. How many of our children, people, and pets will have to die before we stop letting China make all this shoddy stuff?
