On Friday 20 January 2012, the movie Red Tails was released to the viewing audience. This movie is a World War II movie with a little love story mixed in. The characters were rich and well presented throughout the movie. The audience learned about the main character’s personal demons that drive them to action whether it is to succeed, fail, or to be the daredevil. The movie focuses around Easy (Nate Parker), Junior/Ray Gun (Tristan Wilds), and Lightning (David Oyelowo) as they struggle to become the men that they were meant be while fighting in a war where they are considered a liability instead of an asset. Once given the chance the Red Tails prove the short sighted and small-minded people just how wrong they were about African Americans. The Red Tails fought with honor and held to the mission against all odds (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/21/tuskegee-airmen-red-tails-los-angeles_n_1212214.html#s627586).
The love story occurred between Lightning and Sophia (Daniela Ruah). Daniela Ruah’s appearance in the movie was a nice surprise. Her acting seemed a little off however, that might be because the loving Sophia is the exact opposite of the feisty Kensi (NCIS Los Angeles http://www.cbs.com/shows/ncis_los_angeles/cast/36189/?pg=1).
Red Tails is a tale that was just waiting for George Lucas to put on the big screen. It’s a movie that Hollywood should have produced and marketed. The audience in the Griffin, GA movie theater on 21 January 2012 consisted of a mix audience ranging in a variety of ages. This proves that a movie can have a cast of mostly African American and still appeal to the masses.
Last week this movie was number two at the box office and if people continue to watch it, Hollywood will see just how to market such films. This is a movie worth seeing so grab the keys and head out for some family entertainment at the movies.
