Stories of parents refusing modern medical attention for their children because of their religious beliefs have been making the news of late. Recently, a mother fled with her 13 year old son in order to avoid chemotherapy treatments that conflicted with the family's belief in natural healing. The public response was mixed: some thought it was neglect on the part of the mother, but others felt her right to decide how to care for her child was in his best interest, particularly since the chemo treatments can be very painful.
Today, it has come out that John Travolta and his family, who publicly denied their son Jett had autism, did acknowledge this when they spoke to police in the Bahamas after his tragic death. Scientology, the religion of the Travolta family, does not generally acknowledge autism as a legitimate diagnosis, prefering instead to focus on detoxifcation as a solution to the symptoms of the disorder. Kelly Preston, Travolta's wife, had publicly stated their son Jett suffered from Kawasaki Disorder, which they believed was brought on by toxins in the environment.
Many people accused the Travolta family of refusing to offer their son the treatment he needed, saying they valued Scientology above their child. Unlike the case of the mother who refused chemotherapy for her son, the public response to the family has been largely negative on this issue. It can be argued that the treatments for autism are not as painful as chemotherapy, but the chemo has a cure rate of 90%, while autism treatments do not cure the disorder. Of course, by denying the diagnosis of autism, it contributes to the stigma and shame associated with the disorder.
No doubt there will be a public outcry as this story comes out, but I still feel terrible for the Travolta family. They lost a son, and there is no way around that.

As a Scientologist, I am outraged at so much of the media's snide implication that Mr. John Travolta's religion was to blame for Jett's death. The truth is that Scientology provided John the tools to handle his son's spiritual condition through the standard application of LRH tech. Instead, John chose to poison his son with the psych drug Depakote. John, you are an embarrassment to all of Scientology for turning to the pseudoscience of psychiatry. This is the overt that pulled in the tragic end cycle of your son. Please, John, for the love of god, get your ethics in and PLEASE disconnect from the psychs.

The drug was not in fact given to Jet, who suffered a fatal seizure as result. The reason it was not given was due to the pressure the COS placed on the family to ignore several thousand years of medical knowledge and instead, use methods prescribed by a man who barely graduated high school and never attended more then a semester at an accredited college. the reason why COS is against it is because Dianetics was meant to be a psychitry help book but the APA said its junk and Hubbard isn't a doctor, so he got all butthurt and said that psychitrary=evil. for more info, visit whyweprotest.net

Ron, why didn't MEST help his son? Is it that he was stuck in the GE? Travolta's OT5 powers obviously don't work. He would have been able to see the potential death of his son and by going exterior into an alternate universe been able to fix the situation before it ever reached the point that it did. Even at OT4 he should have gained his special power to go fully exterior which would have been enough.

Real Scientologists know autism isn't a valid diagnosis. There's no blood test that can find it or diagnostic procedure that can detect it, it's purely in the mind. I've suspected for a long time that Travolta wasn't a real Scientologist, he simply jumped on the bandwagon when it was becoming popular. It's about time he was outed if he's going to go around talking against the core beliefs. It makes us all look bad, and it's no wonder there's so much confusion about Scientology with people like him running his mouth.

I've been a Scientoligist since 1990 and so what if John Travolta looked for other alternatives for his son Jetts condition, Autism or whatever you want to call it, that is his right to look for all means that could possibly help his child, you would do the same if you had a child, and so what if the Church of Scientology doesn't believe that Autism is a real disease. We Scientologist can THINK FOR OURSELVES and there are situations where medications are needed and are beneficial!! John you did what you needed to do, good for you. It is unfortunate that so many choose to take an unsubstantiated story and use its assumptions to justify undeserved attacks on the Travolta's and the Church of Scientology. Please recall that the Bahamian police were found to have threatened the promotion of such stories in an attempt to blackmail the Travolta's. The Bahamian police are, therefore, not a credible source for any such information. I would also suggest that those who, from their comments, know nothing of Scientology, find out before they comment. Likewise, the Travolta's should not be accused of actions you can not substantiate.

One can only feel very sorry for John Travolta and his family it does not matter how much money you have or how successful you are you still might not have it all together, and he most certainly needs scientology as his crutch. He has to live with the fact that he made a decision that in the end killed his son and that is the worst in the world. My daughter who was 18 made a decision to give up her schooling and join the sea org that we have no say in this affect her whole family too. We want to save her and cant. Only I thank other countries other than South Africa that ban Scientology.
