Obama's school speech video: Watch it here

President Obama at Wakefield High School

President Obama delivered the speech to students across the country today that has created quite a controversy. The setting was Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia and was met along the way with protests. One sign read "Mr. President, stay away from our kids." Not exactly a warm welcome!

Before giving his speech, the president met with a group of students in the school library. Proving he's not entirely out of touch with what kids today are up to, he advised students to "be careful what you post on Facebook. Whatever you do, it will be pulled up later in your life."

The speech drew controversy from some conversatives who believe the president is bypassing parents and going straight to children to push his agenda. Other parents were more concerned about the proposed lesson plans that were to accompany the speech, including one that asked students to write a letter to President Obama on how they would help him. Although the lesson plans were revised, and never mandatory, parents were still upset that the federal government was involving itself in educational curriculum, something that is decided at a state level.

Now that the speech is over, President Obama will likely get back to his latest controversy: Healthcare reform.

Here is the president's speech, in case you missed it or would like to watch it with your child. Oh, and you might want to read this, too: Laura Bush on Obama's speech: 'It's important to respect the President'

I thought President Obama's speech was very encouraging and inspiring. I can't imagine anyone having a problem with anything he said unless they are anti- America.

Most parents dont do their parenting work and thus offended by this speech, I feel sad that those parents never grew up...
This is the most neutral speech that can inspire students to finish school, I'm just amazed how those parents can say so?... All public schools are government ran, so what's the difference?

I don't see what was in the speech that made parents upset. I didn't get to see it at school because of limited viewing, but watching it now, I think it's great.

To all of you parents that did not want your kid's to see this speach, you are a bunch of people who do not care about this country or your children.
I see first hand what this country has become due to the no student left behind method of teaching. I have students in a automotive technical school who cannot even print or even read.
So those of you who disagree, please leave this country, WE do not want you here! country.,around.

You people are so stupid, he doesn't care about the American population, he's just telling you what you want to hear so that you'll agree with him, don't be so naive, take a look back in history at all the other countries with leaders like Obama, THEY FAILED because their leaders, like Obama, were saying one thing while sticking to their own agenda.

This is to all parents who did not want their children to hear President Obama's message:
It's sad to be so disrespectful, ignorant, and racist. First, teach your children RESPECT (he IS the President of the US) regardless of his color. Second, teach them the importance of EDUCATION (which is all he stressed) so thery are not ignorant like you. Third, teach them to not to judge others by the COLOR OF THEIR SKIN and to have a mind of their own. Please stop making excuses, you are in opposition of everything when it comes to the President, just because he is BLACK. America is very diverse so you must learn to accept it and teach your children that or MAYBE you should start searching for somewhere to live because that's the way it is!!!

Enough, who's topic does this belong in, exactly? The President-speaks-to-kids-and-parents-discuss-it reporter? The Parents-protest reporter? The parents-debate-about-politics reporter? How exactly does a story about the president addressing children directly while parents get mired in controversy over it NOT fit in the PARENTING category?

The fact that the speech was good is debatable. I personally felt it was inspiring. But to go as far as saying parents who didn't want there children to watch it are racist? You are more than willing to degrade others when they disagree with you. Here is the facts, Obama could have preached an agenda. Obama could have spread what his "truth" is. What if you don't agree with that as a parent? How can you allow your child to be exposed to someone you don't completely agree with. For Obama to feel that he needs to institute moral structure in this country is wrong. This is a country founded under God, look how far we have come. Sex, violence, and sickening images are exposed to us today. Now Obama wants to preach about what is right? If he cares about the kids of America he will stop being lukewarm to his ideas. You want better education, get rid of all the crap on TV! The schools want more textbooks, stop allowing the senators to break the law by giving themselves a pay raise!
