Many years ago, when I bought my very first crib one of the most important things I was warned of was making sure that the space between the slats was safe and that my child could not get a head, hand or leg stuck as they move and roll around their bed.
However, that fear has been replaced by another one, that of children being caught between the side rail and the bed, resulting in injury, illness and quite possibly even death.
The U.S. Consumer Product and Safety Commission with Stork Craft Manufacturing Company recalled 2.1 million infant cribs due to the following injuries and deaths:
- "110 incidents of drop-side detachment;
- 67 incidents occurred in the United States and 43 in Canada.
- The incidents include 15 entrapments; 12 in the U.S. and three in Canada.
- Four of the entrapments resulted in suffocation: a 7-month-old in Gouverneur, N.Y.; a 7-month-old in New Iberia, La.; a 6-month-old in Summersville, W.Va.; and a 9-month-old in Bronx, N.Y.
- Included in these incidents are 20 falls from cribs; 12 in the U.S. and eight in Canada. Fall injuries ranged from concussion to bumps and bruises." (Source USCPSC Release 10-046)
The injuries and deaths were a result of faulty equipment or improper installation of the side rails causing them to loosen, break, or become deformed or missing. The side rail would become loose, allowing a child to fall and become trapped between the side rail and the mattress (see photo above)

This is the largest crib recall ever in the United States and adding this recall to many other crib recalls results in approximately 5 million cribs recalled in the past few years.
Details regarding Stork Craft Cribs being recalled:
- drop side cribs
- manufactured between 1993-October 2009
- both Stork Craft Cribs and some Fisher Price logo cribs are included in this recall
- look for the manufacture date, model number, crib name, country of origin, and the firm’s name, address, and contact information on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board.
- look for the firm’s insignia “storkcraft baby” or “storkling” inscribed on the drop-side teething rail of some cribs.
- cribs containing the “Fisher-Price” logo; this logo can be found on the crib’s teething rail, in the manufacturer’s instructions, on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board, and on the end panels of the Twinkle-Twinkle and Crystal crib models.
Parents should discontinue using these cribs immediately and contact Stork Craft Stork Craft toll-free at (877) 274-0277 anytime to order the free repair kit, or log on to www.storkcraft.com.
The cribs being recalled were sold by major retailers in the United States and Canada and include the following retailers: BJ’s Wholesale Club, J.C. Penney, Kmart, Meijer, Sears, USA Baby, and Wal-Mart stores and online at Amazon.com, Babiesrus.com, Costco.com, Target.com, and Walmart.com from January 1993 through October 2009 for between $100 and $400. The cribs were manufactured in India, China and Indonesia.

Most importantly, parents if you have any of these cribs do not use them. Find alternate sleeping arrangements for your child until you receive and install the appropriate repair kit and do not attempt to repair on your own. Avoid being the mother in this youtube video who shares her experience with the defective Stork Craft crib.

So important. Thanks for the details.
I wonder why more people don't use the mesh cribs since problems with cribs (with bars) have been happening for over 40 years - I'm proof of that, or should I say my left hand is since I still have the scars.
Great minds think alike. :-) I just wrote about this too.

what about the model numbers for these recalled cribs
I just read Emylou's article too.
I agree Margaret. When you do a recall of 2 million cribs, you'd think you'd want to publish the model numbers affected. That's probably half the reason their website and phone lines have been inundated today.
I've been wondering all day if my son's crib is on the list. Regardless, it has drop-sides and plastic hardware so he will not be using it again. I've already ordered him a crib without drop-sides and will not recommend anyone purchase a Storkcraft product since this is their second major recall this year.
I believe they are saying all cribs with plastic hardware for the drop-side are affected by the recall... no model numbers needed this time aroud as all plastic hardware needs to be replaced!
I can't believe that they want us to order a repair kit to fix them!!! Give me my money back!!!
their website dosent even come-up now and the phone numbers are all buisy. Im going to go to their wearhouse in richmound @ 7433 Nelson Rd. If you are able to you should to.Its the only way that anyone is going to get results from them
Good point, Bobbi. It seems like this happens way too frequently.
I don't know how this company stays in business. 2 million cribs recalled after the 500,000+ cribs recalled in January and May. It's unbelievable.
I'm with Amanda on this one. Unbelievable.
I couldn't believe that part about them wanting people to repair their own faulty crib, either. Horrifying.
