For Silly Bandz fans summer can't come too soon. Today Time reported that Silly Bandz have been banned in several states schools including New York, Texas, Florida and Massachusetts. Don't know what Silly Bandz are? They are the latest craze among children (and even teens). Silly bandz are silicone, colorful, "rubber" bands in different shapes. like shapes, numbers, letters, beaches and the most popular animals. There are several types available and the colorful neon colors make them a popular accessory.
Many teachers are not fans of Silly Bandz. Talking to a Houston teacher she agrees with this statement in the Times article, "It's a distraction," says Jill Wolborsky, a fourth-grade teache, who banned them from her classroom before the principal implemented a schoolwide ban.
This Houston teacher goes on to say, "They are a distraction, students are slapping them, trading, and checking out who has what on their arm instead of taking care of the business of school." With many of our children taking final exams right now it could be a distraction that we can't afford, even with the deal I recently found on Silly Bandz.
Here in Houston moms have been posting on Facebook and Twitter, "Where can I find SIlly Bandz?" Well I found them at Office Max with 30 in a pack for $4.00 and some change (other stores were $19.00 for the same product!).
Summer will be here soon, and since there is the ban parents should advise their children to wear them after school or wait one more week then show off their silly bandz for the whole summer vacation dressing up, or is it down, their summer swim wear and fun in the sun clothing.

I think that teachers would find that the sensory feedback that such bracelets give children could actually be a positive outlet for students with ADD and related focus disorders. Studies have shown that children who are allowed to wiggle in their seats, etc, are able to focus better than those that are forced to sit still. The kind of sensory help you get from pulling or snapping your rubber band bracelet would be very helpful for these children. So sad that schools are about control of the group rather than actually doing what is best for the child.
wat they cant do this silly bandz r cool!
Snapping a rubber band over one's wrist hurts. Imagine doing it all day long. This will cause harm to your child. Not only that ... it can also be associated with not only harming yourself but there is the possibility of hurting other children. Children with ADD and ADHD need painless ways to be refocused that won't and can't be associated with any type of hurt. Talking from experience.
what kids find fun, doesn't sound like anything I would have liked even when I was a child.
If a child doesn't have enough sense to stop snapping themself with a rubber band until it hurts then they need to be in a special classroom. These silly bands are not harmful. I agree if they play with them take them away. But if not what's the harm. They will learn if you take them away and give them back when earned. And whoever wrote this/someone would have to really snap these to hurt themselves because they are pretty loose. More power to the silly band wearers. fourth grade teacher
There is always a school fad, if not silly bandz it will be something else. I remember all kinds of crazes like pods, wrist bands that you slapped on your wrist and they wrapped around it, scrunchies the girls would trade, and beads. It was all fun and games, but if it's causing a distraction why not have the kids leave them in their backpacks and have fun with them at recess? I don't agree with a ban, just allowing a specific time to play with things like before school, after school, and out of class.
I can already see from the school in which I teach that these bands are a quickly passing fad, and will soon be just another memory. Good reporting Lisa!
I'm not surprised. Kids are googoo over them. However, they could restrict them, not ban them. If you can't keep a kid focused on you and not a bracelet, you shouldn't be teaching.
Catching up after a week in Vegas.
Interesting controversy. I hadn't heard of these things before, but there's always some sort of fad going around.
I must have officially gotten old because I've never heard of these things.
This too shall pass. Probably by fall schools won't have to be concerned about them!
