Wikipedia Public Domain Clearlake Library

There is more to public libraries than books and references. Harris County Public Libraries offer many special programs in addition to their free lending library services of books, references, DVD’s, VHS tapes, books on audio, music, magazines, computers and internet services. The special programs offered by HCPL system are excellent, and offer something for everyone. Best of all they are free!

Harris County Public Library offers for Children:
Many of us remember from our younger days the summer reading program, but Harris County Libraries now offer learning a love of reading from a very young age. They offer Baby Bounce, Toddler Time, Preschool and Bilingual Story Times with age appropriate activities and stories. You may sing, dance, read, color, and create beautiful artwork. Many holidays are celebrated with homemade crafts and cards created at the library during the children’s time as well as special events and activities like Harry the Clown or learning about snakes.

Harris County Public Library offers for Teens:
Are you worried about your teen “hanging out?” If you leave them at the Harris County Public libraries they can have their own book club, be introduced to other cultures, learn new things, get homework help, and participate in special project. The library also offers college admission help, college test prep (ACT and SAT) and financial aid workshops for parents and teens that are college bound.

Harris County Public Library offers for Adults and Seniors:
Adults and Senior citizens can benefit from internet training programs, income tax preparation assistance, internet and computer access as well as many other special programs and workshops designed just for Harris County residents.

The library also offers free computer and internet access to many who may not have it available to them otherwise. Children and adults can learn and use many computer skills and adults will find it useful in today’s economy for assisting them with their employment search.

Bilingual customer service and special programs means that those who speak Spanish and English are provided with wonderful learning and social opportunities.

Cultural programs show Houston residents the great big world. Houston is a very diverse city and the special cultural programs throughout the Harris County Library System can help us get to know those cultures, people and histories.

Several libraries throughout the system offer family movie days providing even more opportunities for free family fun in Houston.

So, the next time you are sitting at home wondering what to do; visit the Harris County Public Library on-line and find out what fun and educational opportunities you may be missing.

Great article...I'm a 3 book per week reader and love going to the library. I have noticed that the Harris County branch on West road isn't stocked anywhere near as well as the Tomball college location.
But, the system that HCPL has set-up to transfer books from one place to another is amazing. And, being able to renew online? Fast, easy, and friendly.
Terrific place to take the kids in the Summer!!

    Hi Lisa,

Going to the library is something I've always loved doing. The library is so much more than books. The movie selections are also much better than they used to be and they provide so many community programs. Good sharing of info.

Also, thanks for your comment on my article on perfectionism in abusive relationships. I've subscribed to your work.
