The joy of cuddling

Daddy and son cuddle and enjoy the beauty of touch
Nicole Kedrowski

The days and nights are finally starting to cool down in Hawai'i which allows the beauty of human touch to not be a sweaty mess anymore.  Partners curl up together as they fall asleep at night and children stumble into bed during the night and burrow in right between the two.  Soon enough, the family is snuggled together and sleeping soundly as the night progresses.  What a blissful way to wake up in the morning!

Human touch is an essential part of a well-adjusted human being.  Research shows that newborns respond best outside the womb when touching a caregiver.  To accomplish this, many parents wear their babies in a sling and/or share sleep at night.  As children grow, they may be continuing to sleep with their special grown-up or may be welcomed in for some early morning snuggles.  Some families choose to keep their cuddle time to the living room while reading books are taking in a movie together.  No matter how a family chooses to cuddle, it's an important part of family life.

There are even dozens of articles about cuddling and human touch out there.  This article gives some suggestions to families who may need to learn how to add more cuddling into their family life.  An online dictionary even gives us a definition of cuddling.  More and more people have learned of the benefits of cuddling and those with no one to cuddle even attend cuddle parties where they snuggle in or just enjoy human touch with perfect strangers.  Australia even enjoys a National Cuddle Day!

The health benefits of cuddling are tremendous as well.  Human touch has been proven to reduce stress, clear the mind, and bring a general sense of well-being.  All of these things lead to more well-adjusted people with more positive thinking minds.  Maybe we just should cuddle our way to world peace.

In this day of autonomy, take a step back, and cuddle with your kids.  The days are short that we get with our young children.  Kick back and enjoy one of life's simplest pleasures.

What a great article! I can't get enough cuddles from my two little boys so it's good to know it's not only special bonding time, but good for their well-being too!

Oh the joys of cuddling! Cuddling my babies at work (I am in childcare), or my two wonderful grand-kids (those are the best)are my favorite cuddle times. I miss having little kids around all the time to sneak in a quick cuddle! There are so many babies that are in the special care nurseries in hospitals that could use the extra cuddles. Could be something for people to look into. It is great therapy for all! It's cold here, maybe some extra cuddling while watching a good movie...ahhhhh...bliss!
