First daughters Malia and Sasha Obama are finally getting the puppy they were promised months ago for having to endure their father's grueling presidential campaign. Because of Malia's allergies, the search for the perfect pet has taken a while, but the dog has been chosen and will be officially announced by the White House on Tuesday afternoon.
Fortunately for animal lovers antsy with anticipation, unnamed White House staffers have leaked the identity of the new First Dog to the media. His name is "Bo" and he is a 6-month-old Portuguese Water dog--a nonshedding breed that is reportedly less aggravating for allergy sufferers.
Bo, who has curly black fur and a white goatee, was a gift from Obama family friend and Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy. Kennedy owns three Portuguese Water Dogs himself and believes their temperament is well-suited to the White House and the new First Family. He says they have a "can-do and hopeful spirit" and are "smart, resilient, determined, optimistic, and tireless."
Although the dog is not yet living in his new home, Bo was reportedly introduced to the Obamas in a secret meeting a few weeks ago. The family was won over by his charm and exemplary behavior--he did not make any toileting mistakes or chew up any furniture during the visit. Bo is being trained by the Kennedys' dog trainers at an undisclosed location.
Like his predecessors in previous administrations, Bo is sure to be a much-loved, indulged, and pampered First Pet. His arrival will likely make Portuguese Water Dogs a very popular breed; but if you're looking for a new family pet, please first consider adopting one of the millions of shelter and rescue dogs in need of a home.
