Considering probiotics for yourself? Consider the whole family

In November 2005, a conference that was cofunded by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) and convened by the American Society for Microbiology explored this very topic. According to the conference report, some uses of probiotics for which there is some encouraging evidence from the study of specific probiotic formulations are as follows:

  • To treat diarrhea (this is the strongest area of evidence, especially for diarrhea from rotavirus)
  • To prevent and treat infections of the urinary tract or female genital tract
  • To treat irritable bowel syndrome
  • To reduce recurrence of bladder cancer
  • To shorten how long an intestinal infection lasts that is caused by a bacterium called Clostridium difficile
  • To prevent and treat pouchitis (a condition that can follow surgery to remove the colon)
  • To prevent and manage atopic dermatitis (eczema) in children
Seventy percent of our immune system lies in the “gut” or digestive track. The normal human digestive tract contains about 400 types of probiotic bacteria that reduce the growth of harmful bacteria and promote a healing; when our digestive system is running low on its good bacteria, our bodies start talking to us in other ways. We get sick more often, eczema pops up, seasonal allergies become heightened and so on.  We must be careful as probiotics are also being fortified into our foods making it "functional."  Foods such as Happy Baby Bellies rice cereal, Dan Active Yogurt, Attune "candy" bars to name a few are being promoted as the new health food.  We must be careful which foods we choose as the Wall Street Journal found out, not all products are fortified with enough good bacteria to make a real difference.  But they gave probiotics the thumbs up. The March issue of Health Magazine  found which brands worked for certain issues such as colds/flu’s, IBS, eczema and post antibiotic treatment.

If you decide to take probiotics make sure they are a broad spectrum, contain at least 10 million live cell count and have three different strands or species of beneficial bacteria.

Probiotics can benefit everyone in the family. I began taking them when in 2006 and have been very happy with the results. I give them to my husband when he begins feeling a cold coming on and my pediatrician gave me a pat on the back for giving them to my infant starting last year.  Bring your research and have an open discussion with your doctor about starting probiotics, especially after taking antibiotics or having any type of surgery.
