A beautiful blanket of snow has covered Northeast Ohio so get bundled up and head outside for some sledding. The Cleveland Metroparks has a number of designated sledding areas. Check their website for all the details and directions.
If you can't make it out during the day, don't worry. The Metroparks has a few sledding spots with night lighting. Hinckley Reservation's Coasting Hill in Hinckley Township has night lights. As does the Pawpaw Picnic area in Mill Stream Run Reservation in North Royalton. If you are on the East side and plan on doing some night time sledding, head over to North Chagrin Reservation in Willoughby Hills. Their Old River Farm Group Picnic area might have the perfect hill you are looking for.
Keep in mind safety while you are sledding. While most people consider sledding a “safe” outdoor activity, accidents can and do happen. According to the National Safety Council, about 33,000 sledding injuries are treated in hospital emergency rooms each year. Here are some tips to keep you safe:
1. Never sled in unsafe areas such as streets & driveways.
2. Sled in well lit areas that are free of trees & fences.
3. Wear insulated and water proof boots, gloves and jackets.
4. Children under 12 should wear a helmet.
5. Make sure the area is clear and all other sledders are out of your way before you go down.
6. Climb the hill away from others sledding down the hill.
