Educational and conservation messages inspire visitors as they ride the brand new carousel at the Sacramento Zoo.
This hand-carved managerie features 32 lifelike animals; some are endangered, all are children's favorites. Carousel animals include an anteater, flamingo, jaguar, ladybug, snow leopard … even a peacock chariot designed to accommodate people with disabilities. Each carousel animal is carved from wood, then hand-painted to create a truly unique piece.
With expertise in carving, woodworking, pattern making, casting, engineering, machine shop techniques, artistic painting and management under one roof, Art Ritchie and Dan Jones, owners of The Carousel Works, have developed into the type of manufacturing facility that hasn’t existed for over 50 years. At present, Carousel Works is the only company in the world with the in-house capability to manufacture wooden carousels from design to installation
With the price of antique carousels exceeding $1 million, The Carousel Works sought to provide, newly-crafted carousels at an affordable price. They accomplished their goal in 1994 with their first carousel at the Richland Carrousel Park in Mansfield, OH. Since then they have created over 30 wooden carousels that can be found in locations all over America.
