Weather aficionados of all ages can meet meteorologist Kristine Kahanek this Saturday afternoon at Plano’s Haggard Library.

Kahanek, the former chief meteorologist for KTVT-TV (Channel 11) will present a program on severe weather safety and will read from her children’s book Katie and the Magic Umbrella: A Stormy Adventure, said Haggard Library manager Glen Pourciau via e-mail.

The book is about a guardian angel named Katie who takes two children named Alex and Grace on magical weather adventure. There are currently two books in the Katie and the Magic Umbrella series: The Stormy Adventure, which focuses on storms and The Snowflake Trail, which focuses on winter storms.

Kahanek said she wrote the books to teach kids about severe weather and to pay tribute to her daughter Katherine, whom she and her family lost eleven years ago while Kahanek was eight months pregnant with her.

“She’s been our family’s guardian angel since she passed,” Kahanek said.

Fred Frawley, president of the Friends of the Plano Public Library said he’s hoping for a big crowd at Saturday’s event to see Kahanek.

“People who have lived around here remember her,” Frawley said.

After the program, there will a book signing with Kahanek and both books will available for purchase, according to Pourciau.

Kahanek said the program will have something for every child.

“Parents can bring their young, young ones and their elementary age ones,” she said.
