Charlotte families don't have to travel far to get a taste of other cultures this weekend. On Friday and Saturday night the Tri State Youth Rodeo Association continues its summer season. Alternatively, experience the Far East at the Bon Odori Festival, North Carolina's largest festival celebrating Japanese culture.
Tri State Youth Rodeo Association: On July 31 (at 8pm) and August 1 (at 7pm) watch children ages 3-18 compete in a variety of traditional rodeo events such as barrels, calf riding, goat tying (for the younger kids) and bull riding (for the older kids). The event is held at the Circle G Arena in Harmony, NC and available on site are grilled foods and other concessions.
Bon Odori Festival: The Bon Odori Festival is a FREE event taking place at the Atrium Uptown (formerly known as the Wachovia Atrium). From 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Bon Odori will celebrate Japanese culture with a "Bon Odori" Japanese dance performance, a drum performance by "Matsury-za", an aikido martial arts exhibition, a tea exhibition and other foods and crafts. This event is hosted by the Japanese Association in Charlotte and The Japanese Language School in Charlotte and supported by the Arts & Science Council and the Consulate General of Japan, Atlanta.
