It’s not easy being a mean, green, Whoville-hating machine but it is easy to enjoy Dr. Suess' How the Grinch Stole Christmas The Musical showing now through Sunday at the Fox Theatre.
Naturally, this musical is geared towards kids, but I found that it entertained an audience of all ages. I brought along the ultimate entertainment barometer, my four-year-old daughter and seven-year-old son for an evening of holiday delight.
This musical closely follows the original cartoon production. Of course, Boris Karloff was not available to narrate so the writers were clever enough to give the role to an older version of the Grinch’s not-so-beloved pet pooch, Max.
Tip: This musical has no intermission so you will want to knock out those potty breaks early and grab your munchies before finding your seat.
But you can teach an old dog new tricks, and Max seems sentimental about visiting the cave where he resided years earlier with his Christmas-hating owner. While the Grinch doesn’t show up in the first few numbers, he does make quite an entrance. However, this Grinch takes a page from Jim Carrey's performance and lightens up his character’s darker side with humor. I mean, who wants to listen to kids salting their own popcorn with tears.
The Citizens of Whoville are also true to their characters and Cindy-Lou Who steals the show and your heart. And speaking of Whoville, the costumes and props looked like they had jumped off the pages of this Dr. Suess book.
My children were mesmerized with this whimsical musical and left the show not wanting to go home, but to Whoville. Hey, Who wouldn't...
