Bell Museum provides family activities with a nature's view

The Bell Museum located on the University of Minnesota campus, is the perfect place for families to learn about the natural world.

If you've been to the Bell before, you probably remember the glass cases of dioramas exhibiting various animals and birds from Minnesota. You might also remember that they have a touch and see room where kids can get up close by touching a turtle or wearing a set of antlers or perhaps you have even sent your kids to one of their summer discovery day camps.

But there is even more happening for families especially this summer. Here are some highlights:

View from the current exhibits:

  • Wolves and  Wild Lands in the 21st Century (now through Oct 4) Spectacular Photography by Jim Brandenburg shares the exhibit space. This exhibit was put together by the International Wolf Center in Ely.
  • Nature Photography by Dr. Stanley Leonard (through August 23)
  • America’s Best Idea: A Photographic Journey through Our National Parks (opens August 8)

Explore a special event

  • July 19, noon - 3 p.m.:  A Nature Printing Workshop

Take a Field trip with the Bell

  • July 14: Discovering Lichens at Minnehaha Park
  •  August 22: Early Autumn Migrants at the Old Cedar Avenue bridge area in Bloomington
  •  Aug 29 : Hunt for mushrooms at the Mississippi Gorge Regional Park

Drop in for a Nature Play Day

Held the 2nd Saturday of the month, 1-3 pm. Family friendly activities for children ages four to 10 with adults.

  • July 11: Wolves of the World
  • August 8: Fish Printing


Attend a Nature Tot session with your toddler

An interactive program for two-three year olds and their families the first Thursday of the month 10-11 a.m. Pre-registration is required by calling 612-624-9050.

If you can’t get to any of the scheduled activities,  try to visit on a Sunday when admission is always FREE.

They also accept the Museum  Adventure  Pass which gets you four free admissions when you pick up a pass from your local library.

Otherwise admission prices are kept low.
Adults: $4/kids ages 3-16, students & seniors:  $3.

Hours:
Tues-Fri. 9 am – 5 pm
Sat. 10 am – 5 pm
Sun: noon – 5 pm
Closed Mondays.
